Default We need another WR, but...

I am troubled by the fact that we will probably address it this year in the draft.

I want nothing more than a young, speedy WR on this team to boost the offense and move towards the future.
But this year's draft is one of the worst that I can recall in recent memory in terms of WR draft prospects.

There were many last year that peaked my interest in different rounds. (Clayton, White, Murphy, V. Jackson, Bradley, etc.)

But this season there aren't many at all that are jumping out at me.
I like a couple but I'm not excited about any. And FA isn't offering much, either.

I'm just afraid that we are going to get a WR in an early middle-middle round and not only is he going to be average in potential but he is going to deter us from selecting one again in the next couple drafts.

We can't keep playing with 30-somethings and in our current position if we lost Glenn for any significant time you can kiss our season good bye. I don't like our season's success relying on a fragile, aging, albeit talented WR. And even if we can get through another season as is, we NEED our future guy to be here immediately to speed the transition for when he is needed.

Your thoughts?

Personally, I would rather stick with the strength of the draft, LB and OL.

While I agree to a point I kind of have my own take on the whole thing. I agree this is a very weak class of WR's. The only WR worth taking in Round 1 seems to be Santonio Holmes and he could well gone by the time Dallas picks at 18.

I really think if Holmes is gone we need to concentrate on taking the BPA at 18. I do think there will be some good value in Round 2 at the WR position that could pay dividends this year. Derek Hagan, Hank Baskett, Martin Nance and Sinorice Moss are all players Dallas could look at in Rounds 2 and 3 that could come right in and make a difference. Moss is one I would like to keep my eye on. Despite his small stature he has the quicks and playmaking abilities of his older brother Santana and worst case scenario he could be compared to Roscoe Parish.

I don't think taking a WR in this years draft will prevent Dallas from addressing the position more in the future if not this year. If we land Holmes then is it a really big deal anyways? If we don't, we will be losing Glenn and Johnson over the next 2 years and the position will have to be further evaluated anyways.

I particularly like Martin Nance of Miami-Ohio, and Todd Watkins of BYU... Nance is rather large (6-5, 220), and has reportedly run the 40 in under 4.4 seconds... Watkins is tall but thin as a reed, and VERY fast (sub 4.35 40s)... to put it in terms Cowboys fans can understand, Nance seems rather Alvin Harper-esque to me, and Watkins reminds me of Mike Sherrard, before he broke his leg... Hank Baskett from New Mexico might make the list, depending on what kind of 40 time he runs at the combines... any of these three might still be on the board when the Cowboys' 2nd round pick comes up...

Of course, at pick 18 the Boys might have a shot at Santonio Holmes, and would almost certainly find Derek Hagan on the board...

-I like Maurice Stovall (ND) although he's not much of a speedster. Great potential replacement for Keyshawn.
and
-Jason Avant (Michigan) once again not much speed but high character and dependable.

I like Stovall big time but to steal one from Bill, I think he's just a biscut away from being a TE.

true.

but fine by me.

TEs seem to be some of the best receivers when talking Dallas.

Stovall could be had in the 2nd-3rd round range, too.

I would have no problem with that move what so ever.

Let's make it final! Qwickdraw and HomeOfLegends are the president and vice president of the Bring Stovall To Dallas Club.

Call it my homerism... But if Santonio Holmes is there at 18, I think we need to get him. A lot of people have pointed out that this years draft has good value for Oline and LB depth, so I think we'll be okay if we address that either via free agency or later in the draft. He is fast and runs great routes. I saw one comparison to a bigger Steve Smith.

I'm with you, Quickdraw. I'm intrigued by some Day 2 WRs but I can't latch on to any 2nd or 3rd round prospects. I don't want to reach for Hagan; Stovall is a player but there is no consensus on where he will go; I watched Baskett once (against Wyoming) and wasn't impressed, although he did blow up against BYU. I thought I watched a fair amount of college football this year but I'm surprised how few of the "top WR prospects" I remember standing out to me. I'm also not pleased that I don't get today's Vegas All-Star game on my DirecTv package.

Does anybody have any thoughts on Matt Trannon from Michigan State?? I'm not sure if he'll play football or if he's going to try to go to the NBA. MSU has him listed at 6'6" and 220#

i was thinking that we can do what we did w/ MBIII, with a legit Wr in the 4th round. cuz believe it or not, MBIII was a big name comin out of college. alot of teams passed on him. we got him, and look what he is doin. maybe we can get a sleeper in the 4th round, and he can do what barber did, but at WR. Just a thought

I would stay away from any receiver in round one.

Santonio Holmes may be a good player, but I wouldn't want him in round one. Next year, he wouldn't be a first rounder. Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Jarrett, and Ted Ginn are all better players. Holmes would be bad value. We can't say, "We need a WR, so we have to draft the best available."

Bad move.....The Texans needed one to start their franchise. They chose Carr, a nice player, but not first pick material. Now, they're seriously considering starting all over at QB.

This receiver group is worse than last year's (one of the poorest in a long time). I remember folks wanting Clayton, but he didn't exactly tear up the NFL.

Holmes reminds me a little of Clayton.....but he's not as good.

If we have to go WR this year, then let's wait until rounds two and three. Stovall, Nance, Baskett, etc may be available then.....they're better value than Holmes at 18.
