Default Eatman: Tnew a Receiver?

NEW Receiver?
OXNARD, Calif. - Terence Newman spent most of his rookie season wondering if and when he would get the chance to return punts.
While that never happened last year, the second-year cornerback is now lobbying himself for another form of extra duty: Wide receiver.
At the end of Monday's afternoon practice here in training camp, Newman ran a few fly patterns with the rest of the wide receivers, and has run some other routes this summer during the off-season workouts at Valley Ranch.
While it's unlikely the Cowboys would use him at receiver on a regular basis, it appears the coaching staff is at least entertaining the idea of some spot duty.
"I was just out there running some routes one day and they said we might be able to do something like that," Newman said. "I worked out and ran a couple of routes during the summer. But as far as me making it (full-time), I don't think so. I would like to. It's just like returning punts, but I don't know if it's going to happen."
Newman, the fifth overall pick in last year's draft, was a three-way standout at Kansas State, playing cornerback, receiver and returning punts and kickoffs for the Wildcats. Along with winning the 2002 Jim Thorpe Award (nation's top defensive back), Newman scored four career touchdowns returning kicks, and also caught four passes during his senior season for 98 yards and one touchdown.
"It's something I like to do," Newman said. "I think it's fun to go out there and run routes. I think I can help, if they need me.
"They pay me a lot of money. So I want to do more things. Playing defense, it's a tough job. But I think I could handle a little bit more."

Deion the Second. I like his attitude. I'll be scared to death of injury everytime he returns punts or lines up with the offense but I'd like to see the Cowboys find more ways to use his talent.

Sweet. Even if its just as a decoy threat. But if he can make some plays and puts points on the board then why not.

You can't be afraid of getting hurt in this most violet of games. Newman can get hurt just as easily making a tackle as he could getting tackled.

I could see him as a decoy, maybe to get downfield and open things up some underneath.

Remains to be seen, though.

You have to love Newmans attitude, whether or not he will line up at WR or not. I hate to bring up last year, but I'm so glad we drafted him, especially after seeing this off season, which proved the corner is valued much more than the DE, when looking at the contracts corners were walking away with

Though I definitely don't want to see him get hurt, I love seeing him say this:

This kid has such a wonderful attitude. I see Deangelo Hall of the Falcons talking about how he's a mix of Champ and Deion and running off about how great he's going to be, and I'm so glad our guy is so humble. And a good tackler. I love him.

Could this kid be any more of a gem?

"They pay me a lot of money...etc., so on".

Feeling a lot of Newman love in this household.

It's not nice to toy with Newman's emotions.

I don't expect to see T-New line up on offense, but with Galloway's speed traded and Randal William's porcelain hands looking to be a problem, the O could use a burst of speed on occasion, IMO.

Newman doesn't have the frame to venture in the middle, so he'd almost have to be a vertical threat on the outside.

The best we could hope for is that Newman would make a nice decoy and help open things up underneath if defenses respected his speed.

But it isn't likely, IMO.

T-New does have some college experience at the postion, but it takes a lot more than speed to play receiver in the NFL.

And if Parcells is unwilling to risk Newman on punt returns, an area he has a great deal more experience at, it becomes very tough to see him playing both ways.

This kid IMHO was the MVP of the defense last year.
