The "He Finally Got it" Award

Basically Cowboys fans love to pronounce our draft picks to be busts. Every year it seems like a player or two emerges from these busts and finally gets it. Since Parcells has come to Valley Ranch we have seen this every year. When several players do well it bodes well for the Cowboys. Here are my examples for the past few years.

2003 Flozell Adams - He signed that big contract and all of a sudden started playing like a probowl OT

2004 Terrence Newman - The year started off rough for Newman and his confidence was shaken but in the final 1/3 of the season he started to shut people down and has not stopped since.

2005 Bradie James - Everyone seemed to write this guy off before the season and he showed up big this past season with plays against the run and the pass. Really seemed like the only LBer not named Demarcus that could take on a block and ake a play.

Honorable mention to Patrick Crayton who preinjury became a reliable receiver especially on third down.

Basically I want to see a reapeat of last season where we had two guys whos lightbulb switched on. Here are my candidates.

Stephen Peterman - Really an unknown to us beyond a solid performance in the 2005 preseason. I really never have understood why people are so down. I guess its just the fear of the unknown. The guy is an excellent position to win the starting LG spot and start for years to come.

Kevin Burnett - The guy never was healthy enough for long enough to get his stride going. First the hip and now an ACL tear he is having to recover from. That being said if he can get healthy is a phyiscal specimen with speed and power. If his light comes on its going to be lights out.

Andre Gurode - People think this guy is dumb. I think people that say that are dumb. There is a difference between being able to explain Einsteins indictment of Newtons inertial system and being able to make a read in one second while putting a hit on someone. Parcells himself has stated switching him back and forth between center and guard which has happened a total of three times so far was unfair to the guy. I think consecutive years at center gives a good chance for this guys light to come on.

Al Johnson - This si a bit more difficult. It doesnt seem that he needs to improve greatly in being in the right spot at the right time. I see it more of an issue of refining and adding consistentcy to his technique. It has been pointed out that his technique is inconsistent by Parcells and if he can add a bit of strength and consistency to his technique he can turn his light on and move to the next level.

Im sure there are more but to me these are the most likely to win the award and really i feel the sucess of these guys is going to dictate how we perform next season.

I just imagine how great a team we would have if three of these guys' light bulb flickers on.

I think one of our CB's goes down and J. Reeves steps it up big time.

The other day I was watching a couple of our games and this kid really stood out everytime he was thrown at! Even in clutch situations he came up big (Philly game, broke up a pass that would have given them an easy field goal). I think he has a bright future in head of him.

Agreed. I saw someone post in another thread that he was on his way to Jacob Rogers status. It just shocks me that people make up their minds based on absolutely nothing. I see Peterman starting and Kosier backing him up. Not that I have seen anything to make me think this, but Parcells has spoken postively about him and who expected him to really compete with LA for the starting LG spot. It's really no surprise he hasn't seen much action.

I think Petitti can be put on that list also. I think he has it mentally. He needs to improve his strength, which according to sources he has and improve his footwork. It may not be long before he can beat Fabini out for a starting spot.

I was really disappointed in Burnett...he was actually my favorite draft pic...high energy...and great athletic skills.

Hoping for the best this year.

When does the season start? Soon I hope.

My prediction is that if Petermen and Kosier show to be pretty equal in training camp, Parcells will give the nod to Peterman, that way Kosier could go in as the back up for multiple positions.

I think Newman's early troubles in 2004 where due to the coaching staff having to get used to knowing his capabilities and strengths. That year they started off having Newman play a lot of soft coverage and he would constantly get beaten on double moves. Once they started to have him play tight coverage more frequently, he didn't seem to have many problems.

If I was going to pick a guy to "get it" this next season it would be Marcus Spears.

He had a rough go at it since he hurt his knee his senior year and was about 20 pounds over his ideal weight. He was clocked around a 5.1 forty time in his pro day, with a sore knee. But, I think when he took off with that fumble return I thought he ran pretty well.

What I'm saying is that I think he'll stay much healthier than he has in the past year or so, and he should be accustomed to the 3-4 by now. With that, I think we could see the guy that was compared to Richard Seymour and Kevin Williams finally come close to living up to that hype.

I could make the same arguments for Chris Canty.

Coming off the eye and knee injury he probably didn't head into the season in great shape and didn't play much football at all in 2004. According to Mr. Pettitti he's already added a lot of upper body strength and should go into the season in top form.

He showed flashes last year, but I think we are going to get a better idea this season why some were regarding him as a 1st round talent.

I agree Juke..I was hoping Burnett was gonna play lights out..

Though now he has something to prove...

This may be a good thing for the Cowboys IMO

Absolutely.

Spears despite hs struggles, was singled out by BP as being our best DL guy in a couple of games.
