ESPN The Magazine Cowboys Draft Analyisis
This was the Cowboys Draft Needs section of their Draft Preview in the latest magazine.
Dallas Cowboys First Round Pick: No. 18
Free Safety: Though he fills hard, Keith Davis lacks ideal speed and gets caught out of position far too often. Dallas will zero in on a lockdown safety to push him for the starting job.
Cornerback: Starters Terence Newman and Anthony Henry are talented but inconsistent, and nickelback Aaron Glenn is on the downslope of his career. A polished, instinctive corner would help stabilize the secondary.
Nose Tackle: Dallas needs a situational run-stuffer to spell the undersize Jason Ferguson. He can hold his ground at the point of attack but tends to wear down over the course of the game.
Big Number: 10 - The number of current starters drafted by the Cowboys since 2000. (Stephen Peterman, Al Johnson, Jason Witten, Julius Jones, Marcus Spears, Bradie James, DeMarcus Ware, Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton (Kick Returner), Terence Newman)
Hall of Fame: Maryland DT Randy White, 1st Round, 1975
Hall of Shame: Arizona St. DE Shante Carver, 1st Round, 1994
Kiper: They addressed wide reciever and offensive line needs through free agency, so I expect them to go for secondary help and pick Jason Allen, who played safety and CB at Tennessee.

(ootball)?! Terence Newman was probably the most consistent corner in the league last year. Henry was a Pro-Bowler before he got hurt. And Glenn is one of the best Ball Hawkers in the league.

One thing Jason Ferguson is not is undersized.

Solidifies my belief that ESPN hates and is biased when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, and obviously don't pay attention to know that STEPHEN PETERMAN IS NOT A STARTER. And no where near that.

How do you know this? He and Kosier will be competing for the starting LG spot this summer. I hope Peterman wins out to justify his draft spot and allow us to have Kosier as a flexible backup.

His rookie season was very good also.
I think when a corner does what Newman did last season he's gone beyond the point of being "inconsistent".

I know right, inconsistent means you are consistent one moment, then screw up the next, but Newman didnt' allow a TD all year, so what then in Heaven's name made Newman inconsistent? he didn't allow a catch every other time either, so you can rule that one out too

What an ignorant statement.
How are you going to get a polished cornerback out of the draft better than Newman or Henry? Especially, this draft and with the eighteen choice no less?
No wonder the average fan is oblivious to reality. They read drivel like this from a supposed expert and become an imbecile as a result.

I've been preaching that Ferguson is undersized, but no one wants to listen.

Oh I think there is merit to that. I just don't want to spend a first day pick on a NT.

I agree with that. Plus Parcells did draft Ferguson in the 6th round, so I think we can pull Steve Fifta in the 6th as well.

If by inconsistent they/you mean can be beaten by Steve Smith in single coverage or plays less than stellar when injured I'd agree.
Other than that show me a better CB over the past 3 seasons.
But I still don't know what any team saw Thursday night that would have made them comfortable with waiting a round or two for the offensive lineman they wanted. ---Todd McShay
We just converted half our LB to DL. We have a 30m starting DL, it better be pretty friggin good.

my own version for absolutely zero charge.
Cowboys Draft Needs
Dallas Cowboys First Round Pick: No. 18
Free Safety: Dallas has played with two Strong Safeties each season since Roy Williams was drafted and it worked well when the other safety was Darren Woodson who had man coverage skills. Since then it's been more miss than hit and I mean that literally. The only true FS on the squad, Willie Pile, is not going to wow anyone and Dallas would love to plug in a draftee here. Kiper's man-love target Jason Allen would be a great fit but also has an history of injuries to be concerned with. Round 2 makes more sense for the free safety and there has been talk Dallas would consider moving Anthony Henry back to Free Safety and adding a CB at 18.
Cornerback: Dallas has the best 3-deep CB rotation in football. In fact they look for excuses to play them all in as many sets as possible. Henry and Newman both tackle well for CBs and Newman simply does not get beaten very often at all. Henry is physical and can be beaten by pure speed guys if the the play lasts long enough for a false move in the route. If Dallas does draft a CB it will mean moving Henry to safety because they already like their depth quite alot with Jacque Reeves developing into the best 4th CB the team has had since at least the early 90s.
Nose Tackle: Dallas needs a backup to Jason Ferguson who can handle 20 plays a game and develop into a future starter. A 3rd round pick here would make alot of sense and guys like Gabe Watson and Claude Wroten who touch or surpass 300 pounds after a jog make alot of sense.
Big Number: 5- Number of Lombardi Trophies Dallas has won and also number of trophies they have more than the Philadephia Eagles.
Hall of Fame: Emmitt Smith, 1990. 1st Round
Hall of Shame: Duane Goodrish, 2000. 2nd round.
Terrell: Dallas will target OLB/S in round 1 but will not mind being creative to fill those holes which means moving Henry if a CB they rate highly falls or moving a DE like Manny Lawson to OLB. They like to move down when they have multiple guys on the board with similar grades as they did in selecting Julius Jones after a move down.
But I still don't know what any team saw Thursday night that would have made them comfortable with waiting a round or two for the offensive lineman they wanted. ---Todd McShay
