Goose is about as good as predicting a prospect's success in the nFL as I am, or anyone else is

Last year we got 2nd or 3rd best LB at #11 when #1 (DJ) went 16 and #2 (Merriman) went 12.
That is of course if you listen to the internet draft "gurus" who listen to hype machines and don't take scheme into account.

If you're looking at a site that listed Ware as a DE last year or Manny this year......I apologize for that site.

unless it is two cement headed white outside linebackers

It is worth noting that his draft projections doesn't neccessarily equate to what rank these players hold in their perspective positions.
I will be pleased if we take a player who can start and make plays.
I think Carpenter fits that mold.
But the results are all that matters.

That list gets a whole lot smaller.

The question is about value. Are we getting value with the #18 pick if we draft Bobby Carpenter. Its a perfectly legitimate question. Who cares how often Goose is right, but considering he's basing his opinions off of professional talent evaluators while most of us are basing our opinions off some draft website run by a 45 year old virgin in his mother's basement, I would say he's better informed than us. Everyone is so focused on who can step in right away next year. I want the player that's going to have the best 10-12 year career and make the most Pro Bowls. To say "Well, he's probably a slight upgrade over Rocky Boiman" isn't exactly what I want to hang my hat on with the 18th pick in the draft.

3. Chad Greenway Iowa
4. Demeco Ryans Alabama
5. Bobby Carpenter Ohio State
6. Thomas Howard UTEP
7. Roger McIntosh Miami
8. Clint Ingram Oklahoma
9. Jon Alston Stanford

1. A.J. Hawk...Would be perfect for us but he won't be there when we pick.
2. Ernie Simms...Too small for a 3-4 OLB and also probably wont be there when we pick.
3. Chad Greenway...General consencus is that he is not good at shedding blocks which is key for a 3-4 OLB.
4. Demeco Ryans...More of an ILB, too small for the 3-4.
Which bring us to...
5. Bobby Carpenter...Big, fast, OLB that can shed blocks, drop into coverage, and rush the passer who should be available when Dallas picks.

i dont doubt that Carpenter would probably be #2 on that list if you asked our scouts and coaches, but for Goose to have him ranked 5th on that list, brings me to the question is he worth taking at #18, dont forget alot of you praise taking the BPA, which clearly he wont be at 18.

I think that if you were to compare the LBs and their abilities to play in a 3-4 vs. a 4-3 defense, Carpenter might be placed higher on that list. I'm not claiming that Carpenter may not have his share of shortcomings, but for a 3-4 defense, I think he may be better suited than some of the other top 4-5 LBs though. Again, that's just my opinion and if we do end up making a trade with Jax or anybody else, it may all be a moot point anyway because by the time we would pick in the 28th spot, the top LBs that we might consider may well be gone by then anyway.
