Will someone explain to me why it's imperative for Houston to sign Bush before the draft when they have all spring and summer to hammer out a deal?

I actually heard Bob McNair (or maybe it was one of his underlings) talking about this on NFL Sirius. He basically said they just made it a priority to have a contract done before the draft. He didn't want any chance of a hold out.

I think they just want to have a basic deal structure in place so they don't have to go through any hassles about him showing up to Training Camp on time, being ready to play when the season starts, etc. (i.e. San Diego)
They also might want to have the contract established if this whole Reggie Bush/Family/Expensive-*** House They Didn't Pay For situation gets a little pricey.

So, if Reggie is available at 18, do we take him?

Once a player is drafted he gains all of the bargaining chips. There's already a ballpark figure in place based on the previous year's contract for that draft slot factoring the increase in the rookie cap.
The only way a team can come out ahead is to use draft position as a tool. If these reports are true, Bush and co. have cost themselves millions by refusing to agree to terms pre-draft. One would also have to think that the Saints at #2 are questioning how much Bush is asking for and whether he is going to want #1 money.

This was just confirmed on Houston Radio on my way home about 15 minutes ago.
That the Texans are going to draft Williams #1
Sports radio 610; the host Lance Zierlein from the morning crew got it from inside contact source.
Mark it down (By the way 610 is the home of the Texans radio)

$50 says he suffers a major injury within the first 3 games. You just can't take pounding after pounding and keep getting back up. The body simply doesn't work that way and I'm afraid Mr. Carr is going to learn that the hard way this season. It sucks because he seems like a genuinely nice guy.
He just holds onto the ball way too long, has absolutely no pocket presence, and has the worst OL in the entire NFL protecting him. Not a good combination.

If that was the case Bledsoe should be dead

Can you imagine the Boys passing on Aikman in '89 because Mandarich was more "signable"? This is the "nose to spite your face" mistake Houston is making.
