Default Trade Greg Ellis for Antwan Peek

Greg Ellis has made it abundantly clear he prefers a trade rather than attempting to continue in the 3-4 defense.

Antwan Peek is an outside linebacker who has played well in the 3-4 defense for the Texans.

Ellis would give the Texans a 4-3 defensive end to pair with #1 draft pick Mario Williams.

Peek would give the Cowboys a high motor pass rusher to replace the disgruntled Ellis.

Ellis is a better fit in a 4-3 defense.

Peek the better fit in a 3-4 defense.

I think such a trade would be a win-win for both clubs and I'd be interested to know what everyone else thought?

Sounds good but there is one problem......would the Texans accept that deal?

Who do you bench to play Peek? Carpenter?

Well, who would we "bench" to play Ellis in his nickel role?

It is a nickel role, that means part-time player. Nobody would have to be benched.

It's nothing I've read anywhere, more or less a connect-the-dots trade scenario like a lot of the media do.

Given the changes in the teams' respective schemes, I think it makes sense for both sides.

The Texans' motivation would be to acquire a proven defensive end to prevent teams from simply double-teaming first rounder Mario Williams. Trading for Ellis would accelerate their transition to the 4-3 defense. They would also be getting a quality player with a very reasonable contract.

The Cowboys would be trading away an unhappy player ill-suited for the 3-4 defense. They would be getting a player who excels on special teams, has a high motor and looks to be on the brink of establishing himself. They would also be getting a player who's not yet 27 years old.

Great idea, let's turn this into another Ellis thread. We could really use another one!

Forget Ellis, he is gone in this trade scenario. Peek is a 34 OLB, is he not? So who do you bench to play him?

Uhmmm ..... When the proposed trade involves Ellis for another player straight up, its kind of hard to not include him in the discussion.

The Texans would trade him for the very reason you mentioned, Peek would be a free agent at season's end.

Ellis would be under contract for several more years.

The Cowboys would be the team which would have to agree to a deal with Peek before a trade is done.

Not only is Peek an OLB, but he plays on the weakside where Ware currently plays. Unless the Cowboys think that Carpenter is a liability on passing downs, then why would you stunt the growth of one of your young OLBs?

1) I felt it was a unique scenario, that's why I started a new thread

2) You're not forced to read or respond - it's voluntary

3) Peek would be taking Ellis' pass-rushing role for the Cowboys, you would "bench" the same player you would for Ellis to see the field

Its a good proposed trade. It makes a lot of sense. Which is why it will probably never happen.

Peeks not exactly a household name, but I will check into his stats, but I have to chime in on all this."trade Ellis now, while is value is at its peak... no pun intended."..
I just dont get it,,, look how long, and how many miserable late first round DE busts we indured, trying to obtain a Haley replacement.
Over a decade of trying to find a pass rushing threat in the 4-3 at DE, and never succeeded.
Now everyone seems to be so compelled with the notion of trading away argueably the 2nd best pass rusher on this defense.
Are those who are in line with this thought process so inclined to bet the bank on Carpenter as being "good enough", to replace a proven commodity in Ellis, to hang out for trade bait.
I dont want to take away from this defense, and loosing Ellis for anything less than a "proven" commodity, would be a mistake.
If anything, I would rather see a top back-up QB, or 2nd round atleast for Ellis, but even at that, I think this defense and fans, would find out soon enough, how much of a presence would be lost on the field, should Ellis depart.

But we could just talk about Peek's role on this team and save Ellis' pros and cons for one of the other 1,000,000,000 threads.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just wondering where Peek would play. Would he just be depth? Because IMO we are now (finally) pretty well stocked at LB, if Burnett comes back.

And Stash, I didn't mention that as anything against your thread. I was actually trying to help it by attempting to keep the focus on Peek rather than having it get derailed into the Ellis gutter.
