Default Iowa Man Fired for Drinking Ethanol Fuel

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man who claimed discrimination after being fired from an ethanol plant for drinking "automobile fuel" has been denied unemployment benefits.

Cory Neddermeyer, 42, was dismissed by Amaizing Energy in April. The Denison-based company produces ethanol fuel for vehicles in a formula that includes a high concentration of alcohol.

According to Neddermeyer, he showed up for work on April 21 and saw that there had been a spill of fuel alcohol. Hundreds of gallons of 190-proof alcohol were held in a 6-inch-deep holding pond that was about 30 feet by 24 feet.
The liquid had not been blended with gasoline.

"I am a recovering alcoholic, and I thought about the availability of this alcohol throughout the day," he wrote in a statement later provided to state officials. "Curious about the taste and its effects, I dipped into this lake of liquor and drank what I considered to be 2 to 3 ounces. The next thing I remember is waking up in Crawford County Memorial Hospital."

Neddermeyer was found by co-workers in an incoherent state. He was taken to the hospital, where his blood-alcohol level, according to state records, was reported at 0.72. That's almost twice the level considered potentially fatal for many adults.

Neddermeyer was briefly hospitalized for acute alcohol intoxication. His employer searched his work area and allegedly found three empty bottles that contained trace amounts of the fuel.

So he says he only drank 2 to 3 ounces and was that far gone?

What people will do for alcohol.

My cousin, while serving in Kuwait, told me that some guys would by aftershave to drink because there was no alcohol sold there. Others started making their own stills.

I have heard of people drinking rubbing alcohol if they could not find a beer.

It's a shame people have to do stuff like that.

Holy Moses. It sounds to me like he's fudging his numbers just a tad.

I never knew alcoholics were a discriminated class. I mean, I understand why an alcoholic would get fired. I have no clue why they'd take issue with that firing.

"You can't fire me, I'm an alcoholic."

"Tell that to OSHA and our Insurance carriers."

Well I am glad we did not have those guys in Basic.

I think they knew better.

However one of the other platoons Drills came in during the night and was doing the standard checks and just threw is cig butt in the toilet.

The next morning our Drill was screaming and waiting for one of us to confess to smoking in the bathroom and threatening us with this and that.

So someone said they smelled smoke when whoever was on duty checked in during the night and the Drill checked with the other to find out it was him.

He was NOT a happy camper with that other drill

Ahhh c'mon. Seriously...who hasn't blown a .72? In fact, My Dr. has advised me to keep my blood/alcohol level consistantly above .50.

Perhaps you know him...he's the one they call Dr. Feelgood.
I have signatures turned off.
