Dawkins signs two-year extension with Eagles

CANTON, OHIO (Aug. 6, 2006) -- Brian Dawkins agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Eagles that could keep the five-time Pro Bowl safety in Philadelphia through the 2008 season.
"It's nice to get this out of the way and it's time to get the season going," Dawkins said before the Eagles played the Oakland Raiders in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. "I'm looking forward to being here another two years. It's a good thing for me, absolutely, and for the organization."
Dawkins, who will turn 33 in October, was to earn $3 million in the final year of his contract this season. Terms of the new deal weren't immediately known.
Dawkins is the leader of a star-studded defense that played far below expectations last season. A second-round pick from Clemson in 1996, Dawkins has averaged 94 tackles per season, and his 28 interceptions are the fifth-highest total in team history.
He made his first trip to the Pro Bowl in 1999 and overcame a serious foot injury that sidelined him for nine games during the 2003 season.
"When the time is right and the Hall of Fame knocks on Brian's door, he will be recognized as one of those special players," Eagles president Joe Banner said. "He is as top quality a player as we've had since we started with this organization. He's a top-quality guy, he's loyal to the Eagles, he stands for everything we believe in. He has a great work ethic, he's a winner, he works in the community. Brian represents the Eagles perfectly."
Dawkins is the third player to sign an extension with the Eagles this summer, joining offensive linemen Shawn Andrews and Jamaal Jackson. Last year, the team refused to redo wide receiver Terrell Owens ' contract one year into a seven-year deal. Owens eventually was kicked off the team following a series of infractions, including repeated criticism of the organization and quarterback Donovan McNabb.
Dawkins made it clear in minicamps that he wanted to remain with the Eagles and wouldn't cause any problems.
"It means a lot. I started my career here, I made a great connection with these fans, something that not a lot of players can say," Dawkins said. "I have enjoyed my time here and I'm glad it has not ended yet."

He's a Hall of Fame calibre safety and would be a lock had the Eagles won a Superbowl. Now he'll need advocates. Sad.

You know what i find intresting about this. THey have redone 3 deals this year, and redid Westbrooks deal last year, but they werent capable of redoing TO's deal, after he did everything he coudl to come back for the SB (whether it was for himself or the team), just to watche his QB puke and give up on the game.

On the other hand I would not be willing to redo a 7 year contract after the 1st year into the contract either. He got a 7 year 49 mill contract and want more money after 1 season? I don't think so.

I'm with you - if it's year 4-5, and you have some massive roster bonuses coming, then you have a beef. After year one is flat bad negotiating.

like he was gonna get that money in the 7 deal, and who knows what terms he watned it under, all we know is he wanted more money now, instead of waiting for the end of the deal.

Exactly. I'm no fan of the eagles but I think some are not being fair about any of this. If Dallas signs a player to a 6 or 7 year deal and then the very next year he is causing problems and complaining about money I'm not sure too many would care for that.

Then he should not have signed the darn thing. You sign a deal then I expect you to live up to your end of the deal not come hollering for more after 1 season.

like teams live up to the contracts they ask players to sign. Am i saying TO was right no. But i mean i just find it intresting that they've redone 4 deals since saying that they wont be re-doing deals

Yes they have redone some deals as do all team but not after 1 year into a 7 year contract. Come on.

When it originally started he was not asking for more money, he was wanting the 6.5 million roster bonus that was going to be due 2006 to be brough forward and guaranteed. Because he thought he would be cut before it was due. Basically the same thing Ellis has been saying now.
