Great list and if I can suggest some more songs to you that fit that general genre.

Twilight Time - The Platters

I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now) - Otis Redding

I Can't Get Next To You - The Temptations

Get Ready - Rare Earth with Smokey Robinson (The Temptations also did this but I like the Rare Earth version as it has a tad more oomph to it)

Gimme Some Lovin' - Spencer Davis Group

Mother in Law - Ernie K-Doe

Money (That's What I Want) - Barrett Strong

Dancing in the Street - Martha & the Vandellas

And finally...pretty much anything done by Marvin Gaye.

That's how I look at it. I won't deny that I've downloaded many songs over the last two years (ever since I got a good enough computer to do it.) But through doing that, I've been able to discover great bands like Spoon, who I saw last year, and a lot of international artists (Gilberto Gil, Geoffrey Oryema among others) whose music I never would've been exposed to had I not had the possibility to download it.

I still prefer having the album as I feel it provides the complete picture which the artist is trying to paint. However, I resolutely refuse to pay iTunes money for music. If I'm going to spend, I'll get the CD.

It is a great way to check stuff out -- that's exactly how I got into Spoon and Gil as well!

One of my Brazilian students gave me a Gilberto Gil album. It's called Refazendo and I highly recommend it. As for Spoon, they're a great live band and pretty solid in the studio as well. They have a bit of an Elvis Costello sound, which is certainly a good thing.

If you like Gil you should check out the early stuff he did with Caetano Veloso -- the two self-titled Caetano releases are great. Also, Os Mutantes has a great collection called "Everything is possible" -- all very much in the same vein (actually Gil contributes to all the above work).

I'll definately have to check that out. Another good Brazilian musician is Geraldo Azevedo, a guitar player from the north-east (Recife I believe.) I'm not a big fan of Latin American music (I suffer greatly when staying in Venezuela with my wife's family,) but I really dig a lot of MPB and even the limited amount of Bossa Nova that I've heard.

Love the Tindersticks! Just got into them about a year ago. Excellent stuff. I've also gotten into Scott Walker recently (who I imagine has had an influence on the Tindersticks.)
