Dom Capers?
If Saban leaves for Bama I don't think the Fins will name Capers HC. Not after his stint with the Texans. If a new coach comes in and cleans house, Capers might be there for the taking as new Defensive Coordinator.

I think we're going back to the 4-3 permenantly. Especially if Parcells is gone.
You'd have Greg Ellis back which is key.
I'd probably want Al Groh or Capers over Zimmer though, if we stayed in the 34.

Greg Ellis in never coming back and if by slight chance I'm wrong, he'll be a mere shell of his former self. That is a VERY serious injury, especially at his age.

Why is everyone assuming Greg Ellis will "be back"?
Was Kevin Smith "back" after his Achilles injury?
At best, he might be a situational player if he makes it back.

i hate to say it, but i agree with you and sarge. losing ellis was a major blow. he was never the haley / dominate player we wanted him to be, but he was consistant and a "tony tolbert" type of player all teams need. if he and ware could have been on the field more, i think both would have benefited from it, as well as our entire D.
finding another ellis won't be easy.

Sarge I have to agree...the chance of Ellis coming back from an Achilles injury is nill to none.

I think Ellis stands a decent chance at a return, comparing a OLB to a corner's requirements is unreasonable.
The loss in ability to backpedal doomed Smith.

Anyone else remember when Capers was all the rage specifically because of the zone blitz scheme that no one was able to figure out how to combat for a while? That was when he was in Carolina and sporting the likes of Kevin Greene, Lamar Lathon, and Sam Mills at linebacker though. Seeing his work with the Texans makes me wonder a bit, and I actually like the guy a lot.

You guys are right. Ellis is done.
Hudson Houck is on the Miami staff as well.

If you'll recall, when Capers was signed by Miami last year as DC, he still had one year left on his contract from the Texans. So they signed him for a minimum salary deal, so that the Texans would wind up paying most of his salary. Anyway, the contract was only a year long, so technically Capers is "available" whether Saban leaves or not. Given that in his one year, he's got Miami near the top of the league in total defense, scoring defense, and sacks, and is very familiar with 3-4 personnel, I'd say he would be a reasonable upgrade.

I don't think Parcells ego could co-exsist with a proven DC. Then everyone would credit Capers with the turnaround. Why do you think he tanked the defense in 2004?

I laugh every time I read about moving back to the 4-3. We were far worse in the 4-3 in 2004 than we are now in the 3-4 and when we went back to the 4-3 against Detroit, they scored the most points they've scored all season long.
It's come down to two major issues....Zimmer and Bradie. Let's get those solved first. I'll take Capers as a D-Coordinator because he has had great success running the 3-4 in so many different places, except for Houston. He has also proven success at getting pressure on the QB with his defenses, except for Houston. So as long as he's not making personnel decisions or Charlie Casserly isn't our GM, he'd be a good fit.
I think it comes down to Crennel and Capers given their tenous situations.
