Favorite John Wayne Movie
Just curious, if you are a fan of John Wayne, what is your favorite movie with John Wayne in it?
My favorite movie would have to be either Island in the Sky or The Cowboys (purely coincidental).

Hos is going to have a "Happy Ending" when he sees this thread.
My own list of favorite JW movies would be:
"The Cowboys"
"Cahill US Marshall"
"Big Jake"
And his last...
"The Shootist"
While I liked his bigger name stuff like...
"The Quiet Man"
"The Alamo"
"True Grit"
And several of the WWII themed flicks I prefer the ones I listed up at the top.

The Cowboys is probably my overall favorite.
However I like the Rooster Cogburn movies as well.
I also like McClintock and the Sons of Katie Elder...maybe because of the humor.

1) True Grit
2) The Searchers
3) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
IMHO, if your list of "Favorite JW movies" doesn't include The Searchers in your top 3, you simply don't get what the 50's-60's Western-movie-genre was all about.

I got a little misty eyed.
There are 2 kinds of westerns (my favorites), John Wayne movies and all the rest. I also like a lot of his war movies. My order of favorites changes all the time.
Westerns
1. McLintock
2. The Cowboys
3. Red River
4. True Grit
5. El Dorado
6. Stagecoach
7. The Searchers
8. The Shootist
9. Big Jake
10. Rooster Cogburn
War Movies including US Cavalry
1. Rio Grande
2. Fort Apache
3. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
4. Sands of Iwo Jima
5. The Horse Soldiers
6. The Longest Day
7. In Harm's Way
8. They Were Expendable
9. Operation Pacific
10. The Green Berets
Best of the other Genres
1. The Quiet Man
2. Islands in the Sky
3. Hatari
4. The Legend of the Lost
5. Hellfighters
6. Donovan's Reef
The one John Wayne movie you should NOT see...
Blood Alley

Rio Grande
Big Jake
The Shootist
In Harm's Way
Stagecoach
El Dorado

Rooster Cogburn
Hatari

Fort Apache

Donovan's Reef
McClintock
Islands in the Sky
The Green Berets
Interesting that this should come up right now as there are two John Wayne movies on at this moment: AMC has "The Hellfighters" and TCM has "The High and Mighty" which was the movie "Airplane" was spoofed on.
Captain Nathan Brittles: "Only the man who commands can be blamed. It rests on me... mission failure!"
"Jerry Jones is a billionaire fan who bought his own team for the express purpose of buying his way into the game. He wants to hang out with the players, stand in front of the cameras, be the face of the team (yech), make personnel moves as if this were a video game, and more than anything else, be seen as the guy who made it all happen."

the shootist is by far and away my favorite john wayne movie.
awesome cast and he really was dying of cancer in true life.
the scene where jimmy stewart tells him how long he has to live still gives me chills.
ron howard, jimmy stewart and lauren bacall were simply amazing.

Everyone of his Westerns. Did not care to much for his non-western films.
My father n law is a huge JW fan. He has every JW western made (well maybe not all but has alot). We spent a whole weekend a few years back and watched every movie he had. Good times.

I despise John Wayne.....all those old Westerns and War movies in general....they bore the hell out of me.
However if I will say.....the Alamo was good. That is the only John Wayne movie I like. It helps being born and raised in San Antonio.
The only old school war movie I like is Shenandoah (Jimmy Stewart)
