Default various sunday game thoughts

Wasnt any 1pm game that stood out for me, spent time watching bits and pieces of alot of different ones...some thoughts:

1) The Giants are a better team than I thought they'd be. They handled Cleveland a little easier than we did, though Cleveland was down like 3 or 4 starters. Also, it was surprising that Cleveland was hardly flagged vs us for holding but had 4 or 5 offensive holding calls vs the Giants, incl one that wiped out a long TD run by Williams Green. The Giants OL is playing much better than I thought they would. They arnt a playoff team, but probably wont be the 4-12 dreg I thought they'd be either.

2) While we're on the Browns, anyone else wanna say they'd still rather have Jeff Garcia than VT? Garcia doesnt look like any sort of improvement over what Cleveland had at QB...

3) Watched the Eagles as much as I could stand (and it wasnt much)...the officials this yr CLEARLY are giving the Eagles a ton of leeway, they've benefitted from poor officiating in all 3 of their games...those were two terrible PI calls on the Lions that led to the eagles first TD, after the 1st qtr I hardly watched this game, but I did see enough of Kevin Jones to see that passing on him wasnt a big deal. I'm one of those thats been very critical of McNabb, but wll admit he is playing far better this yr than last yr. His throws seem to have a little more zip than I remember and he is definitely throwing with more accuracy. Will be interesting to see how they fare though when they face quality defenses.

4) Jacksonville and Atlanta are both 3-0, I bet niether makes the playoffs. I watched alot of the Falcons game yesterday and between them and Arizona that might have been one of the worst displays of football in modern league history. Josh McCown IS Chad Hutchinson reincarnated, dude fumbled 3 or 4 times and was benched late for Shaun King, despite completing like 80% of his passes for the game. McClown and Vick took turns trying to see who could give the game away. On Jax, they could EASILY be 0-3 and have a really poor offense. Byron Leftwich does NOT look like the 2nd coming of Dan Marino or Warren Moon.

5) talk about a team with a cakewalk to the postseason, Seattle has it made. The Cards and Niners are both 0-3, St Louis is 1-2 and could easily be 0-3 themselves. The Niners used to cakewalk this division yr in and yr out to a playoff berth, its Seattle's turn now.

6) tale of two disasters...Kansas City and Miami are a combined 0-6. The Dolphins have scored 23 pts in 3 games...

7) Norv Turner was run off by Dan Snyder and Deadskins fans, he might end up winning a division title this yr in Oakland. Snyder has paid ENORMOUS sums of money out for Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier and now Joe Gibbs, and after this yr Turner will have one more playoff berth elsewhere than Snyder will have in 5yrs with these other 3 coaches.....Turner's done a good job early with an Oakland team that was pathetic last yr...

8) Green Bay and Indy have no chance of winning a championship with the defenses they have

9) Roy Williams of the Lions is going to run away with rookie of the yr

10) 3 best teams right now, New England, Seattle and Philly...3 worst teams are San Fran, Miami and Tampa, with Arizona and KC in close pursuit....

David

I think your pretty much on the mark with your comments. I might add the biggest choke job of yesterday had to be KC, they dominated the game aginst Hou but pulled some of the dumbest I have seen. with a 2nd and goal to goal Trent Green throws an int that is returned 102 yards for a TD yet you have a RB who was over a 130 rushing and was having his way with the Texans. The TD would have put KC up 21 to 6 and instead with the return the game is tied 14 to 14.

No the 3 worse teams in the NFL I would replace KC for Buffalo (hope I am right on the Bufallo part) You could even argue Tampa is better than Buffalo.

Both have good defense and bad offense but Tampa should be starting Simms which would give them an upgrade at QB where Buffalo has no one to turn to because their rookie broke his leg

atlanta is also in a weak division...they'll be in the playoffs.

jacksonville's D is so good, they are starting to remind me of baltimore's super bowl run.

how fun was it to watch bret and payton go at it?

also, let's not forget about the bye teams.

the jets and new england.....ONE of them has to be a wild card team!

Good analysis David.

Yeah, it was a little bothersome that NYG had an easier time with the Browns than we did.

I have to admit, Philly looks tough. McNabb looks good too. I have a difficult time estimating how good they really are.

Tampa Bay is done... stick a fork in them.

Same with Miami... I'm hoping they can beat Buffalo just once.

Is it that both Indy's & the Packer's defenses are that bad or are Farve & Manning that good? I think the tougher enforcement of the rules is making a lot of secondaries look bad.

Watching Philip Buchanon last night brought back memories of how I was kinda hoping Dallas would have chosen him over Roy Williams.

Scary thing about Roy Williams for the lions is that he is doing this without Carlos Rogers on the other side to temper the other teams Defense.

He really has made some nice plays...I think the only thing at this point that will be a threat to him becoming R.O.Y. is an injury.

The GB secondary was hampered by injuries and a rookie playing....combine that with Manning/Harrison and a greatly underated #3 WR in Stokely and it provides an air show like we saw.

Far as Colts secondary....hey they have Freeny (sp?) on D and that is about it...but they too had some injuries in the secondary.

That first Quarter was like watching two passing college teams going at it...speaking of which when does Boise State and Fresno State play, is it this weekend?

roy williams looks awesome. my hope is the buffalo #1 allows us to get a player of his caliber. he is a homerun for the lions. he is dominating already. he looks smooth and natural.

Jacksonsville's defense is stronger than I thought. I would rather have a strong defense and poor offense than the other way around. It gives more promise for a playoff run. Leftwich is still raw. He and the offense may be better later in the year. I wouldn't just count them out of the playoff hunt right now. Wins are wins until you lose.

I saw alot of the NYG-Cleve game, and they did handle them on the scoreboard a little better (though it was 20-10 until NYG scored with about a min or so remaining)...the thing NYG did was not turn the ball over and get flagged for alot of drive killing penalties like we did...the penalty thing was kinda lame, as Cleveland was flagged left and right for offensive holding this week (one wiping out a long William Green TD run) and only had one vs us last week. Also, the Cleve DB's had hands of glue vs us, but dropped a couple of should have been picks vs Warner...we did alot better job defensively vs Cleve than NYG did, and Clevel was down 3 or 4 starters yesterday too...

but as I said, NYG is better than I thought they'd be...
