Bears sign ex-Cowboys QB Hutchinson
September 27, 2004
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears on Monday agreed to terms with quarterback Chad Hutchinson on a two-year contract. The agreement is contingent on Hutchinson passing a physical.
Hutchinson played in 10 games over the 2002-03 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before being waived during the offseason.
The 6-5, 237-pounder started the final nine games of the 2002 season and finished as Dallas' leading passer, throwing for 1,555 yards while completing 127-of-250 passes with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions.
His 66.3 passer rating as a rookie was higher than two players chosen in the top five of the 2002 NFL Draft: Houston's David Carr (62.8) and Detroit's Joey Harrington (59.9).
Hutchinson set a Cowboys franchise record by opening his NFL career with 95 pass attempts without an interception. He led Dallas to consecutive wins vs. Jacksonville (11/24) and vs. Washington (11/28), connecting on two touchdown passes in each contest.
In the win over the Jaguars, Hutchinson threw for 301 yards on 14-of-26 passing for a career-high 102.8 passer rating. Hutchinson appeared in only one game in a reserve role in 2003, but was allocated by the Cowboys to Rhein Fire for the 2004 NFL Europe season.
The fourth-rated passer in NFLE last year, Hutchinson completed 126-of-207 passes for 1,356 yards with five touchdown passes and four interceptions for a passer rating of 80.1.
Hutchinson signed a seven-year contract with the Cowboys on January 26, 2002, returning to football after four years playing professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. The Stanford product briefly made it to the major leagues in 2001, before making the decision to return to football.
