They just resigned Ellis... they keep both... it becomes a DL rotation... they swap from 4-3 to 3-4 throughout the year...

And to think, they tried 3 or 4 times to move up from #20 in order to get Spears and weren't successful. Then they land him @ #20 w/o having to give up anything. How lucky is that?????

Isn't it amazing the good things that can happen when you sit still and allow the draft to come to you...this draft fell right in our laps..

Also great when you have a game plan, ie, switch to 3-4 and then select players to fit that plan.

The pairing of Ware and Spears has great upside potential...if all goes well, they'll compliment eachother for a long time. We are going to have a NEW LOOK defense next year...and FINALLY, some size.

Parcells has done a very good job here...even if the players don't pan out, which is always a risk, the planning has been excellent.

Glover. Best asset is pass rush and that skill doesn't fit a 3-4 DE. He would be wasted here but can still bring excellent value in a draft pick. Don't know, but salary could come down to who is traded, if anyone. Ellis has played as high as 285. I think he's trimmed down as he's gotten older. He could easily get up to 285-290 if he buys into the defense.

Love the Spears pick. Fits great as a DE in a 3-4 or a DT/LDE in a 4-3, and as previously mentioned will be a TE in goal-line Offense. Great football smarts. Great body for the NFL. Extremely durable.

Ware can play in both a 3-4 as a rush LB or as a situational rusher in a 4-3 (early on). We're going to be very difficult to scheme against.

Give me Josh Bullocks, Corey Webster at FS, David Baas/Marcus Johnson, or maybe even Vincent Jackson in a trade down and I don't think anyone will have had a better draft than us.

The best news is Ware is the hybrid defender. He will be an OLB but can also step in to DE and shuffle Ellis or Spears inside for an immediate 4-3. The offense has to adjust literally on the fly.

Okay, defense will be the 3-4 look. Starters seem to be:
    NG - Glover
    DE - Ellis, Spears
    OLB - Ware, Singleton
ILB - Nguyen, James (move the bigger LB inside)
    CB - Newman, Henry
S - Williams, Scott (this guy keeps hanging around so he must be doing something right)

    Depth is provided by:
DL - Ferguson, Blade, Carson, Coleman, Ogbogu
    LB - O'Neil, Shanle, K. Thornton, Fowler
DB - Hunter, Davis, Jones, Reeves, B. Thornton

That's 25 of the 53 roster spots. Maybe throw in 3 extra rookies and FA's for the developmental squad. Lock and load.

My only criticism is that if the plan were to go 3-4, we should have gone after Pat Williams over Jason Ferguson to fill the hole at NT.

My other criticism is I wonder if we have enough LBs to pull it off.

    Ferg, Henry, Ware, Spears

4 solid additions. Now we get a safety and move Roy to the LOS and lookout!!!

    Glover will play a lot.

He'll rotate in at DE and NT in passing situations. A fresh Glover and Ellis will be much more effective than they were last year... and they were effective last year.

Nope. 3-4 is here (for a significant number of snaps each game). Don't know why so many have a hard time believing it.

NT - Ferguson is 3 to 4 years younger than Williams

LB - We just drafted Ware as an OLB.

And still have #42 to add more parts!

Marcus Spears DL LSU 6’4 298
    By: Robert Davis

Marcus Spears has been a force on the Tiger defensive line since his sophomore season. He doesn’t put up eye popping numbers, but the opponents know that they have to stop Spears to have success against LSU. During his All SEC junior campaign, Spears had 49 tackles, 13 for loss, and 6 sacks from his DE position. He had 46 tackles, 3.5 for loss, and 3 sacks during his sophomore season. Spears is so versatile that he was named freshman All SEC as a TE during his true freshman season.

Spears is a beast physically. You will not find very many near 300 pounders with the natural athleticism or speed Spears has. Most players his size are moved inside to tackle, but Spears has been on the outside, and has had success staying out there. Spears isn’t just big, but he brings a great deal of strength to his position. Physically, he brings it all to the table at DE. He is such an athlete that he has played three positions during his time at LSU, playing TE his freshman season along with fullback and DE, and playing DE full time since then.

The knock on Spears is that he doesn’t always play up to his physical ability. A player as big, strong, and athletic as him should just be able to manhandle college offensive lineman, but Spears doesn’t do that all the time. If he played with the aggression that matched his physical tools, we might be looking at a Top 5 pick in this draft.

Marcus Spears is a very good prospect. He may not be the freak pass rusher off the edge, but he can do it all from the end position. If someone gets him to play with more intensity, he could be one of the best players out of this draft. He reminds me a lot of Richard Seymour of the Patriots, with his size and athleticism allowing him to play DE in the NFL. Seymour wasn’t the biggest playmaker in college, but in the NFL, he has developed into one of the best DL’s in the game. I believe Spears will hear his name called n the first round, possibly in the Top 20.

    From Draftshowcase.com

They got their 3-4 rush LB earlier in Ware and now they have a great fit at DE for them. Parcells got two perfect players to make the transition into a 3-4.

OK, that's 2 of 7 for a 3-4. Throw in Nguyen in the middle and that 3. Where are the other 4 players going to come from.

It will still be a 4-3 base with occasional 3-4 looks.

Yes, most will now understand its the 3-4!

Ware is in the "LT" kill the QB type & attack the LOS mode from OLB or could come as a DE!

Spears is a great perfect fit as a 3-4 DE...

Well put that Ed Weder said Parcells should have gone away from zimmy's awful 4-3 his first year, but better late then never...

    Doomsday is BACK!
