Strengths: Was a big-play penetrating DE in college. Is at his best when turned loose up the field. Has very good anticipation skills and initial quickness. Shows some closing burst as a pass rusher and has good instincts in that facet. Has long arms and good sized hands to occupy blockers. He shows a decent array of pass rush moves. Is a relentless player that makes a lot of plays in pursuit. Is an above average tackler with some power at the POA.

Weaknesses: Small school product that got away with below average "measurables" at that level. Has a big frame but lacks ideal bulk for a DE or SLB. He played mostly DE in college but will need to move back to LB in the NFL. He has below average speed and athletic ability. Lacks ideal COD skills. Has minimal experience dropping into coverage and does not project well with stiff hips and below average speed. He also has below average lower body strength and just decent upper body strength.

Overall: Pettway had his best two seasons as a junior in 2003 and as a senior in 2004. He finished with 70 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and five sacks as a junior in 2003. Pettway started all 12 games as a senior in 2004, finishing with 45 total tackles, 16 TFL and 8.5 sacks. Pettway is a small-school prospect with obvious concerns regarding his level of play. He played DE throughout the majority of his collegiate career and will need to move to an outside linebacker role in the NFL either in a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. Pettway has a great frame and room to grow. He is a disruptive run stopper when turned loose up the field and he also has good instincts and quickness as a pass rusher. The problem, however, is that Pettway lacks ideal bulk for a SLB and he also has below average strength and speed. There's a good chance that his lack of NFL "measurables" will lead to him failing to translate his big play production to the next level, which is why we consider him nothing more than a seventh round prospect.
