We are off to California in the summer for our holiday/vacation, and wanted some advice.

Anyone on here been on a tour of Alcatraz.

If so, what company did you use and would you recommend them?

    Thanks

I went last summer to the San Fran area with my ex, and we went on the tour of Alcatraz (incredibly interesting, very much worth it, by the way).

I cant remember what the name of the tour group was, but any of those stands around Fisherman's Warf are pretty reliable, dont think you can go wrong.

I went just a few weeks ago while in San Francisco. There is actually only one tour group that will actually take you to Alcatraz. There are others that advertise for Alcatraz, but they only take you around the island and do not dock and let you tour the island.

I would also advise buying your tickets in advance online:

Now that he says that, he's right. And that tour group was cool. They give you one of those things you put around your neck, and you listen to someone talking as you go through each section of the prison. You even hear the voices of actual former prisoners. It's very very interesting. Then again i've always been interested in historical stuff like that, but the prison itself and everything in there was quite fascinating. I hope you enjoy yourself

Yeah, that was a lot of fun. Definitely make sure you get on the tour that gets you off the boat onto the island.

Definitely take the ferry to Sausalito as well... it also goes right by Alcatraz...

Cool little bar we used to hang out in called the No Name bar over there...

Also... rent a car and go to Muir Woods if you get the chance... it's beautiful... plus you get to go over the Golden Gate bridge...

This is excellent advice. We rented a convertible Corvette and drove up to Muir Woods and Napa Valley. Then eventually took backroads over to Highway 1 and drove down the coast. That drive was the best part of the entire trip.

Really? That's bizarre. Northern California is beautiful. And the city of San Francisco is easily one of the best cities to visit in the US.

    No question.

That place was like a life changing experience to me.

Bought me a little Redwood Tree but it didn't make it...I'm going to try again.

Oh and of course stop on the Rock.

Next time I go back I'm going on a Great White Dive off the Farallon Islands.

That drive is one of the most beautiful you could imagine.

Stayed at Ragged Point Inn on our first drive.

Stayed at The Sea Ranch Lodge the second time we drove it.

    Both were incredible.
