Jerry Jones may live in Dallas and own one of the most highprofile NFL franchises in the world, but around these parts, he’s just another good old duck hunter.

Which is why he has been chosen by the Little Rock Ducks Unlimited sponsors to receive the first Sportsman’s Award.

The award will be given each year to outstanding individuals who have significantly contributed to the sport of duck hunting in Arkansas.

Jones has been a longtime fan and advocate of duck hunting, as well as a major financial contributor to Ducks Unlimited.

One of his favorite events — probably just behind making the Super Bowl — is the annual Wings Over the Prairie Festival that celebrates the beginning of a new duck hunting season.

Jones has brought people in from all over the country, as well as family and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, to kick off duck season.

A banquet to celebrate Jones’ honor will be held Nov. 10 at Chenal Country Club at 6 p. m.

The banquet, of course, will include a live and silent auction.

The banquet is open to the public and to Ducks Unlimited sponsors. For more ticket or sponsorship information, contact Tom Anderson at (501 ) 786-1305 or Bob Butler (501 ) 955-9268.

Speaking of the Cowboys, Cliff Harris, a six-time All-Pro safety for the Cowboys, spoke to the Little Rock Touchdown Club on Monday.

Harris’ son Matt is a freshman strong safety who is redshirting, but Dad has been to many practices and had this observation he shared twice with the lunch bunch :

“Houston Nutt is brewing a championship team up there with the players he is starting to assemble,” Harris said. “I have no doubt he is a champion type coach and will get the job done if people leave him alone.”

Harris played 10 years in the NFL and started in five Super Bowls, including his rookie season.

He recalled the stirring pregame talks legendary Ouachita Baptist Coach Buddy Bob Benson had before games and how he couldn’t wait to hear NFL legend Tom Landry.

“I dressed early so I could get a seat on the front row,” he said. “Coach Landry came in and said, ‘You’ve analyzed the data, studied the plays, the computer printouts are accurate, now go out and play hard.’”

    It brought the house down.
