Here's Brad Sham talking about the big cuts from Friday on The Fan...

Sham on The Fan - April 2, 2010

I remember Doug Free coming out in the 2007 draft and I thought the Cowboys made a huge mistake when they took James Marten in the third round instead of taking Doug Free.

Luckily Free was still available when the 122nd pick in the fourth round rolled around.

I think in time the Cowboys are going to be fine with Free at Left Tackle.

I liked the release of Ken Hamlin. But I have no idea of who the starting Free Safety will be on opening day. I just know that the position needed to be upgraded.

i think the cowboys should try & find a free safety through free agency. i think they'll be fine on the offensive line with free taking flozell adams's place. free's a good player.

    Good stuff.

    Love to hear this:

"This guy is a natural left tackle."

-- Tony Sparano on Doug Free when Free was a rookie.

    That's exactly how I felt.

But that was nothing to what I went through when we selected Al Johnson in the second round instead of Jason Witten.

    I was in shock.

I think we all were. I mean, fans aren't supposed to be experts, but there were dozens of us in the chat room that afternoon who couldn't understand how Witten could last that long. Tom Ciskowski, who scouted and touted Witten, couldn't believe it either.

If we was so good, then why was he available?

    Who is the swing tackle?

As things stand, the swing tackle job would go back to Pat McQuistan.

McQ held the title in '07 and '08 even with Doug Free on the roster.

But we all expect a contender or two to come to camp and challenge for the title.

Yeah I think he's gonna end up being pretty good. He played really well at RT last yr, and that definitely isnt his natural position. I could see him playing his way into a longterm contract extension here.

Oh what would Sparano know? Slate and juck have already told us he will fail miserably at LT.

But you missed the part where Sparano said: "After consulting with the experts at CowboysZone.com, it is obvious that Free cannot play left tackle ... so we're waiting for Dallas to cut Marc Colombo so Jerry can put Free in his natural position."

Ah, don't worry about that. Haven't you heard that it will take care of itself? ;)

    Small school.

    Marten went to BC.

    Free went to Northern Illinois.

    That's my guess.

I think the Cowboys are hoping it's Robert Brewster.

But if it comes down to it I think Leonard Davis is the real backup LT if Free goes down.

imo, no way Brewster can be the swing guy. He is no way suited to man the LT spot. I see the guy as a backup G this year and maybe a starting G in the future, swing tackle not imo.

    Sigh.....

I guess there's not enough of the old SilverStar gang to appreciate my comment. The original SilverStar....not the one on the Scout.com site.

Does anyone remember how Mickey always used to say, "If he's so good, why is he available?" about every free agent?

Guess not....That used to be quite the joke on that old board....memories..

Yea, when TSN went '****' up...and Reality found his way here in it's early days. Sorry to say what the status quo at Scout is today...where inbreeding is OK. There are some there who still love baseball players turned NFL quarterbacks...and are pureblood 'Americans' from the sidelines.
