Does anyone actually believe there's a coach that knows more about special teams than DeCamillis, or any other ST coach out there?

It's about roster depth, not coaching. If you have fast, good backups, you can run down the field and make a tackle. If you have a great returner, you have a great return game. If you have a great kicker, you make a lot of field goals. If you have a great punter.....etc.

Changing the special teams guy changes nothing. Talent does.

    Errr I don't agree.

Pretty much every year for the past several years we go out of our way to draft guys that are supposed to be special teams-capable. On top of that, since our teams our usually so mediocre, we're frequently signing guys off the street to make them work.

    And yet nothing changes.

I was not happy with Joe D during that Seattle game. Fuming as I recall.

But it seemed like by the end of the season, the ST units were okay...and Harris was actually very good.

The attrition of the roster aslo affected our Special Teams as well.

Can't say I'll miss him, but good luck anyway.

One thing we do well under Joe D is cover kicks.

    That's been very good.

But we've had quite a bit of major special teams gaffes that have pretty much cost us games.

Oh, you mean like every team in the league that is drafting a depth guy? No one in this league drafts a LB or DB in the later rounds if he can't contribute on ST.

I like Joe D. The only real complaint I have about him is our KRs jog to the 20 hoping for a hole to hit. I want our KRs to hit the gas and pay no attention to anything but the wind in their hair.

Meh. Not a debate I'll win in this thread, and I've elaborated on it elsewhere. But I believe DeCamilis is not just a good coach, but a very good one, and that our roster churn had more to do with any ST issues more than the coach did.

Either way, I'm sorry to see the guy go if this is happening.

Punt returns have been pretty good under Joe's tenure, but there have also been an above average number of fumbles in the process. KR not so good. I hope that whoever has been scouting our recent kickers and punters stays, that has been a huge improvement vs. a few years ago (injuries aside).

well they gave him permission and he is now on the bears staff.

Nick Eatman is saying this morning that usc lb coach joe berry is not coming here with kiffin.

he and eagleton also said they are getting the sense that all of ryans staff is staying.

which means only rob ryan was removed.

Every special teams coach teaches basically the same thing. Kick, punt, catch, run, get back, block.

If you have Deion, your punt return team is awesome. If you have Felix Jones, you're kickoff return team sucks. Has nothing to do with coaching.

Does that sound like John Garrett is gone regardless or has left for a specific opportunity?
