The 37m for next year is correct(OTC), though they could make him a June 1st cut and at least spread the hit to 18m in 2015 and 19m in 2016. But if they wait until after early March, another 7.5m of his 2015 salary guarantees, bumping the dead money up to 44.5m.

After 2015 he has no more guaranteed salary so the hit wouldn't be as bad, but they will probably add 10-12m more in dead money to 2016-18 by restructuring his 2015 salary of 17m.

They might have an insurance policy to guard against an injury retirement and could recover some cash and cap space, but I have not seen any policy mentioned anywhere.

They could make him a "designated" June 1st cut which allows them to cut him before the 7.5M bonus kicks in for being on the roster.

The dead money would only be 6.35M in 2015the with the entire remaining amount hitting in 20016.

His 2015 salary of 17M would come off the projected cap numbers.

They would end up with approximately 9M (17 - 6.35) of extra space in 2015 without him on the roster.

In 2016 the loss of the base salary would not completely offset the dead money; however, they are currently projected to have over 50M in cap space.

Shouldn't be too hard. Can't imagine there's much to choose from.

I don't think Spotrac has updated their dead money formula for years after 2014. His prorated signing bonus looks to be absent from any dead money after this year.

If that was where you are looking, that is.

Also, the 3rd league day of 2014 has come and gone and $7.5M of next year's salary is already guaranteed.

I think the $37M is correct. June 1st looks to be around $18M for 2015 and the rest in 2016.

@xwalker , be careful, you have ALL of the romo-bashers/haters salivating at the moment...your posts are likely spurning new threads on "how we can get rid of Tony and still compete"....

Or maybe we just realized Romo's contract was a train wreck on many levels. We (who believe Romo is not the QB who will lead this team to a Super bowl) don't have to say a word you folks do all the Tony bashing on your own.

I just don't understand why anyone reads them. "Journalists" have been writing the same trash for the last decade, and its never panned out the way they hope it does, with fire and brimstone.

Good point. I know I pointed out this off-season in dozens of "draft Manziel" threads that the cap hit would be 41M to cut Romo.

I'm referring to if he was cut after this season.

    Spotrac dead-money = 29,908,000

    Overthecap dead-money = 37,408,000

    The difference (37,408,000 - 29,908,000) = 7,500,000 (i.e. OTC includes the 2015 bonus in dead-money and Spotrac does not).

Obviously, if they were going to cut him, they would do it before the 7,500,000 bonus kicked in and therefore the total dead-money would be 29,908,000

Correction. I didn't show the split of the dead-money between 2015 and 2016 correctly.
(I posted from my phone and didn't have my spreadsheet):

    2015 Dead-money: 10,773,000
    2016 Dead-money: 19,135,000

    2015 Base Salary: 17,000,000
    2016 Base Salary: 8,500,000

    Net Cap Space Change 2015: 17,000,000 - 10,773,000 = 6,227,000 (increase in cap space)

    Net Cap Space Change 2016: 8,500,000 - 19,135,000 = -10,635,000 (decrease in cap space)

Current projected cap space with Romo on the roster for 2016: 41,354,786
(Obviously, this will change with new contracts for Dez and Tyron, but it shows that they have plenty of flexibility. Consider that in 2012, that 2014 projected to be about 30M over the cap. That's a difference of 70M when comparing the 2 year future projection from 2012 to 2014.

The $7.5M is already guaranteed so it should be included and would apply to next years cap no matter when he is cut.

Next year an additional $7.5M will be guaranteed if he's on the roster on the 3rd day of 2015.

Spotrac has 2 separate guarantee portions for his 2015 base salary. One kicked in on the 3rd day of 2014 and the other kicks in on the 3rd day of 2015.

$37M is where it is at right now. $18M would apply to 2015 and the rest to 2016.

The discussion is about cutting him after 2014. The March 2014 bonus of 7.5M does not affect the dead-money. That is absorbed in the 2014 cap.

The difference between OTC and Spotrac is the 2015 bonus of 7.5M.

I'm really not sure where the disconnect is at.

    • $40 million guaranteed (Signing Bonus + 2013-14 base salaries)
    • If on the roster 3rd league day of 2014, $7.5M of 2015 guarantees
    • If on the roster 3rd league day of 2015, additional $7.5M of 2015 guarantees
    • 2014 Restructure: $12.5 million
    Seems pretty straight forward.

$7.5M of his base salary (not bonus money) is guaranteed. He has not been paid this amount. It will be paid in 2015.

I have never once bashed him, I am just tired of all of the tony-haters finding ANY reason to justify (in their/your minds) getting rid of him..."he's fat right after getting surgery, he isn't serious about competing!"....the list of examples is endless....my God, I think I want Tony to win a SB most just to shut all of you up

I don't believe that's true. These would be examples of medical retirement and therefore not counted against the cap.
