SAN ANTONIO -- When the Cowboys open the preseason, don't expect Dez Bryant to return punts.

Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis said he wants to evaluate some other return men in the preseason starting Thursday night when the Cowboys take on the Denver Broncos.

"I don't think we will need him back there," DeCamillis said after Friday's practice.

Last season, Bryant returned 15 punts for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on a 93-yarder vs. the New York Giants and a 62-yard burst vs. the Chicago Bears.

Rookie receiver Dwayne Harris, safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and corner Bryan McCann will field punts in the preseason opener.

    Bryant won't return kickoffs, either.

Wouldn't expect him to in pre season.

But he should still be returning punts in the regular season in specific situations. Not every one though.

Thats foolish way to win games. You don't hide your players from injuries. Sure you don't put them in both Punt and Kick Returns everytime, when they are your starters, but you don't completely shield them either.

As for pre-season, obviously thats a no brainer.

Disagree, unless someone else shows the potential to score on every punt.

Dez is a playmaker as a punt returner, and he should be back there just as much as Deion Sanders deserved that job as a starting corner.

Agreed. As long as it's every week in certain situations. He's too good not to use.

I'm pretty interested how well Harris will perform in this role. His value shoots up if can show a spark back there.

He better in the regular season.

Otherwise the team is deliberately weakening that portion of the team.

I think this makes sense. Save Dez until our blocking schemes are all set and everyone knows what to do. He simply is too important for our plans this year as a pass receiver to risk running back kicks during the pre-season.
