Martellus Bennett Says He's Leaving The Dallas Cowboys

One more piece has fallen into place for the Dallas Cowboys. Or in this case it may be more accurate to say that one has fallen out.

In a report in the Ft. Worth Star Telegram, Martellus Bennett has stated that he is not returning to the Cowboys, deciding to go to another team in free agency.

This is certainly no surprise to most of the readers here at BTB. Bennett spent his four years with Dallas in the considerable shadow of Jason Witten, one of the best tight ends in the game. He only caught 85 passes in his four years with the Cowboys, and only four of them were for touchdowns, all in his rookie season. This was generally seen as not living up to the second-round draft pick spent for him.

Bennett did develop a reputation as an outstanding blocker, but obviously that was not enough for him or for the team, which has stated it has no intention of trying to resign him...

I'd bet he does have a choice. He wants to go somewhere he has a chance to start and I don't blame him. We'll see how he does. I wish him the best.

Good riddance. The notion that he didn't pan out because of lack of opportunity behind Witten is BS. Another waste of a second rounder.

Coulda-Shoulda been a "great playmaker" at A & M too, but he came up short there also. I agree, never understood this pick.....

If Bennett taken advantage of the chances he was given, instead of dropping and fumbling the ball, he'd have gotten more chances to shine.

For example, Laurent Robinson comes out of nowhere to become a major player on the team: Because he showed he could be counted on. Bennett was going up against lesser coverage, and mostly played 'oopsy'.

    Talented but inconsistant.

Me either. We traded Fasano and then used a 2nd to draft Bennett, just to backup Witten. Weird.

Martellus Bennett is a solid contributor as a run/pass blocker from the tight end position, so his departure would be significant unless he is immediately replaced by someone as good or better. However, as a receiver...

... bye. Your receiving opportunities were extremely limited, but you never did much whenever the ball was thrown your way. Good luck. See ya. Ciao. Adios. Sayonara.
