They can get another 3m by cutting Orton. That would leave them with around 11m after signing Martin and Lawrence.

Dez' cap number is already 3.1m, so a new deal wouldn't be any lower, but they could eat 20% of his signing bonus by getting an extension done before this year.

Orton has to willingly choose to retire and pay that $3M back, cutting him doesn't do anything for us money wise. Which is pretty much why it hasn't been done yet.

As far as the extra $....I'd be interested in seeing what Erin Henderson has left on a cheap 1 year deal, but other than that save the $ and work towards getting Dez and Tyron locked up.

The savings/cap space will definitely go to Dez, and then Tyron. But let's not also forget that 2015 is supposed to be a talented FA class with the 2010 draft class hitting FA along with the 2011 draft class who aren't designated with the 5th year option, etc. I understand that the majority of teams will resign their home talent but cap issues could prevent them from doing so; they can't resign EVERYBODY kinda thing. Good to have cap space for the home talent but just enough to ADD some talent outside of the draft. It is not unheard of to mix the two successfully (draft and FA). Jared Allen (earlier in his career), Michael Bennett, Reggie Bush, Vincent Jackson, Peppers (CHI) Drew Brees/Kurt Warner (won a SB, took his 3rd team to a SB after already winning 2 while being integral to that appearance).

They get 3.1m back in cap space if they cut Orton right now. The extra 3m that could be paid back from Orton would come in 3 installments over the next 3 years, if Dallas chose to pursue it.

No to Erin Henderson, he's another troubled player that is one more screw-up away from at least a one year suspension.

Then why haven't they cut him?(Orton)

I thought Dallas would take a hit if they cut him and that's why they were letting things play out.

It is in their best financial interest to let him retire rather than cut him.

    I think it'll be 4.5M or so.

Not sure any team was under 3M last year.

I think the rookies are paid out of a dedicated pool but I'm not certain.

I think you are right about that. If I remember what I read, the rookie allotment is set.

It's less than 2M because the draft picks displace other players from the top 51 contracts.

Only 4th round picks and higher generally make the top 51. Hitchens at 528k displaced another player at 495k for a total increase of 33k.

    2013:
    Pick 16, 1.6M
    Pick 34, 986K
    Hitchens 528K
    Total 3.112M

Previous bottom 3 of top 51 about 495K each
    Total 1.485M

    Diff 3.112M - 1.485M = 1.627M

With inflation it will be a little more, but less than 2M.

Yeah I see that they're carrying out the math.

The link I posted doesn't so it's just the cost in terms of how every other contract is viewed (in terms of absolute amount and not marginal increase over the lowest expected contract).

Same thing really, just a matter of perspective.
