McGee Preparing Like A No. 2 Quarterback
Posted by rphillips at 11/18/2011 1:55 PM CST on dallascowboys.com

IRVING, Texas -- Quarterback Stephen McGee learned his preparation can be tested at any time last Christmas Night at Arizona, when Jon Kitna -- filling in for an injured Tony Romo -- went down with a hip flexor.

McGee finished the game and the 2010 season under center. This week, with Kitna listed as "doubtful" due to a sore back, McGee appears the likely No. 2 quarterback behind Romo this Sunday at Washington.

McGee, who typically gets one day of scout-team practice reps per week, took two this week with Kitna resting Thursday and Friday. Romo, who is no longer listed on the injury report for a previous rib injury, took all the first-team reps.

McGee has been inactive for six of nine games this season, but says his approach during the week never changes.

"It's life in the NFL as a backup quarterback," he said. "Opportunities are random. You never know when they're going to come, how they're going to come, what the situation is, where it's going to be. You've just got to always go about your business the same way."

Good attitude. Every back up needs to work with that mindset because you never know when your number will be called on.

I think it's time for Kitna to call it a career and for McGee to be named the #2 quarterback.

I think there is a good chance that this will be Kitna last season in Dallas.

I think McGee has earned the number 2 spot, and should be number 2 next year.

I feel like he deserves it. He works hard. Smart player. Plays cautious. Takes the right attitude day in and day out.

Is he good enough to be a starting quarterback? That is still up in the air, I don't think so, but would love it if he could be either here or somewhere else.

But isn't everything I mentioned above exactly what you want in a backup quarterback who may have to start a few games if your starter goes down? I think it is.

I hope he is number 2 next year.

He has shown signs that he can come in and do a good job as a backup. I think it was still a wise move to keep Kitna this season

I agree with you especially with how Kitna played last year.

Yeah vet experiance paid off. In the meantime McGee is learning and has seen some action and as the game slows down for him he has shown he has the tools to do the job if called on

Just say NO to giving the backup QB spot to McGee.

Bring in a vet, and let them duel it out. No one gets a free ride ... especially at such an important position.

I have no clue whether McGee is ready. If he's not, I don't want to find out under fire.

If he wins out the position, then I'm all heads up. Otherwise, NO.

I agree that the team needs to keep grinding to find ways to improve.

I could see bringing in a vet and a rookie.
