    The Kid Can Play
    Carter's Athleticism Always Stood Out

This story, written by Turner Walston, originally appeared in Dallas Cowboys Star Magazine. For subscription information, please click here.

It started in 2008. North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter, then a sophomore, blocked three punts in the second quarter of a 38-12 victory over Connecticut. With a tipped punt at Miami in the previous game, he'd gotten his hands on four straight. With each blocked punt and hit, the chorus picked up. The kid was making a name for himself: "Bruuuuuuuce."

Yesss. It's always a big-time plus having someone with a knack for blocking punts. It can serve to provide excellent field position and scoring potential for the team getting that block to follow it up with a scoring drive. The mere thought of that possibility is encouraging.

I had no idea who this guy was when we picked him but you can't help but love everything you see and read about this guy. Great pickup and along with Sean Lee we seem to have 2 really good ILB for a 3-4 D.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to see him rip through my Miami Hurricanes for 3 years.

Now it can be a good thing to see him play and do the same kind of playing.

He's gotta be more physical IMO. If he plays the way he did earlier in his career at UNC, he could be very, very good. If he plays softer, he might have a hard time of it.

Everything they're saying about him is everything they were saying about Jaison Williams. I hope he is a good football player who is athletic and NOT an athlete who might become a good football player.
