    NFL Charities, the league's charitable arm, today awarded $1 million to the charitable foundations of 87 current and former players.

    The NFL has locked out cornerback Terence Newman, but the league nonetheless gave a grant to his Rising Stars Foundation.

    NFL Charities award $1 million in grants to players

    “We are proud to support current and former player foundations and applaud all players’ efforts to make their communities healthy, happy, and safe,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who is also president of the NFL Charities board of directors.

    Every year, the league awards grants up to $50,000 to a large range of player initiatives, including those from former players. Brian Waters, Derrick Brooks, Kurt Warner, and Steve Young also received grants this year.
