Cowboys beat writer Rainer Sabin answered reader questions during a live chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights:

Who do you see emerging as the leader of the defense this year?
Rainer Sabin: By virtue of his position, inside linebacker, Sean Lee seems to be the top candidate to become the defensive leader. He makes the calls and he has a commanding presence. The older players have a tremendous amount of respect for him.

Team "chemistry" is that elusive intangible that's hard to define and determine. Nevertheless, do you get a sense that it is better, worse, or same as in past few years?
Rainer Sabin: Hard to tell. We won't really see how it is until a few weeks into the season. There are a lot of new faces especially on the back end of the defense. But I will say that the Cowboys, by and large, have high-character guys that get along. And that couldn't be said a few years ago.

Sean Lee would make a great leader but I prefer he just stay healthy.

I think some might take issue with that. He's our defensive best player - no question. Leader? Debatable.

He's had 1 injury and even that didn't stop him. He played at prowbowl level with a club for an arm/hand.

Funny, I thought he took it over last year when Rob Ryan said he was like a DC on the field. Silly me.

He already is. Ware is a lead by example kinda guy, Lee does that as well as being a vocal leader.

Lee isn't the kind of difference-maker that carries a team on his back because he's aggressive and physical.

The great NFL defensive leaders are incredibly physical and passionate.

Lee's a disciplined RKG. He makes plays because he's smart and in the right place. He'll intercept the ball but don't expect a dynamic, athletic return unless he's already near the endzone.

He has yet to stay on the field for a complete season and don't forget he also has not yet made a pro-bowl roster.

For Lee to lead this team he needs to step up the physicality big time.

You don't need to be an overly physical player to be an elite leader. There are great leaders out there that are very physical players, but it isn't a prerequisite to be one. I would say that for a linebacker he carries the ball exceptionally well.

I think Sean Lee is already the leader.

That's debatable as well. I love D-Ware, but Lee is a BEAST. He may not be there yet, but he's getting close. Kid is gonna be special.

I agree, but Sean Lee is steadily improving and will be there soon.

    Very good, yes... BEAST? No.

Great in coverage, average physicality, terrific intangibles, below average health.

With a light player like Ratliff in front of him, he's not getting much help either.

So according to you he has a terrific intangibles and is great in coverage yet he's not a beast?

That makes no sense at all.

A MLB's main job is to cover and hit obviously Lee does that as good as anyone.

He certainly leads by example. I am talking about a vocal leader however.
