Injury to keep Hutchinson out of minicamp

08:54 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 1, 2004

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR / The Dallas Morning News

Quarterback Chad Hutchinson's NFL Europe season has ended, and he has returned to the United States to have his shoulder examined.

Hutchinson has spent the last week in Birmingham, Ala., being examined and treated by Dr. James Andrews.

Hutchinson, who didn't play last week and will miss this week's game, was hurt in a loss to Cologne.

He passed for 94 yards with an interception, was sacked five times and fumbled three times.

Hutchinson could not be reached for comment.

The injury means he won't participate in the club's minicamp this weekend.

His roster spot is probably in jeopardy, especially if Vinny Testaverde becomes the fifth quarterback on the roster.

Few teams take that many quarterbacks to training camp because it limits the number of practice repetitions each gets.

If the Cowboys release Hutchinson, they will not be responsible for an injury settlement or his salary because the injury occurred in NFL Europe.

Hutch is as good as gone and it's not a moment too soon either.

The union lets this fly? I guess the vast majority of NFLEers are not yet vested, but Hutch HAS to be.

A team can allocate a third year player and hold no liability for an injury?

If this is true, the NFL Players Association would be wise to attend to something OTHER than Tom Couglin's off season policies.

Game over for this man. Shame, it would have been nice to get a conditional 7th round pick! :D

I'd be pretty shocked if JJT is correct on this.

This is better than watching a soap opera. JJT is probably right on this time. Giving up Hutch for nothing really sucks. Granted a 7th isn't much better than nothing. But still, having had the displeasure of watching Hutch play last year the suffering we went thru is worth something!

According to AdamJT13 on another thread, it is a moot point because Hutchinson's salary is guaranteed this year.

    That is correct.

"The seven-year contract that former Stanford star Chad Hutchinson got from the Dallas Cowboys featured a signing bonus of $3.1 million. The base salaries are $225,000 (for 2002), $300,000 (2003), $380,000 (2004), $455,000 (2005) and then $545,000 each for the 2006-2008 campaigns. The base salaries are guaranteed for each of the first four seasons, meaning Hutchinson can make no less than $4.46 million in the deal."

The NFLPA is less a union and more an extension of the NFL Management.

Not so much in this thread but I see alot of pure hate directed at Hutch. Almost gleefull that he didnt do very well in Europe. I for one NEVER thought Hutch was the answer. But the man tried. Gotta give credit for that. He made it to an NFL roster. No matter how bad he has looked he is still a supreme talent to even make it as far as he did. Anyway, it looks like he has come up short. In some circles that seems to be cause to dance a jig on his grave...LOL. Thats plain stupid! But remember, you reap what you sow. IF Quincy is overtaken by Henson or Warner/Testeverde some can expect the same type of shrieking from the other side. By the way, as for me I think Q and Hutch together STILL dont add up to ONE good quality QB. Both will probably be gone within a year at the most with Hutch to exit over the next few weeks.

Valid point Bill. The Q-lovers will toast Hutch's exit. But the reality is that he date with the "executioner" draws so very near also...

If he was not hurt, then he would be playing in NFLE this weekend and still would miss the mini-camp.
