    Tired play dragging Cowboys down

It's only preseason, but recent ragged performances hint at bigger issues ahead

HOUSTON -- The Dallas Cowboys are sleeping in their own beds right now.

Before getting there, the Cowboys traveled to San Antonio; Cleveland; Canton, Ohio; Arlington, Texas; Oxnard, Calif.; San Diego; Houston; and now Dallas.

The Cowboys had one of the longest training camps in the league. They said they were tired but didn't use it as an excuse for how bad they looked Saturday night in a 23-7 loss to the Houston Texans.

This team looked unprepared, uninspired. It wasn't very good.

Yes, it's only the preseason. Yes, this game did not count. It will not dictate where the Cowboys will finish in 2010. But if the season started today or tomorrow, there would be issues.

"We're not ready for prime time yet," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said. "We're not ready for the first game, we can see that, and we've got to keep working."

After this pathetic effort, Phillips spent a good 15 minutes talking to his team with the door closed. He told the troops the effort was unacceptable. He made some teaching points and told them not to dwell on what happened.

Hopefully they will be ticked off about the bad performance on both sides of the ball & take it out in the opening game against the Redskins in prime time.
