Some of the local reporters said that the OL coach wanted to play Parnell full time in 2012, but that "management" wanted to stay with the more experienced Free. The compromise was the rotation. It was again reported in 2013 that the OL coaches really like Parnell but he missed all but 1 preseason game with an injury and was visibly limping in that game. By the time he was fully healthy, Free was playing better; however, it was still reported on the radio by one of the local Cowboys beat reporters that Parnell received extended practice reps with the starters for a couple of weeks because the OL coach or OL coaches were contemplating playing him. The reporter speculated that Jerry promised Free that he would be the starter if he would take the pay cut. Early in training camp, Jerry made a statement about Woicik measuring Parnell's punch as the best that he had ever seen. A local beat report on the radio speculated that the reason Jerry would even know this type of information is because the OL coach was making a case for Parnell possibly becoming the starter but had to get Jerry approval to do it.
