neither secondary is even worth mentioning. but the thing is who has the lb'ers who can cover? next teams are still going to be exposing these lb'ers. u think thats going to stop?

You are aware that a 5 year contract is what best divides out SB money dont you and it has ZERO bearing on what a team thinks of a player?

The Chargers used more than just the draft to upgrade their defense on Saturday when they agreed to contract terms with unrestricted free agent linebacker Donnie Edwards from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Edwards and the Chargers agreed to terms on a five-year contract that also contains an option year.

Well, I disagree with you there. I think our secondary is pretty good.

I think the LB situation is an easy fix as well. Carpenter to ILB and draft one of the tweeners.

Either way they didn't think that much of him.

Donnie Edwards: 5-Year deal worth 18.75M thru the 2007-2008 season signed on 4/24/02- + he is guaranteed 5.75M over the first two years of the deal- + he receives a 1.5M signing bonus, of which 300K is paid in 2002- + he receives base salaries of 525K in 2002, 975K in 2003, 2.85M in 2004, 3M in 2005, 3.55M in 2006 and 4.825M in 2007- + in 2003, he is guaranteed 4.25M in total payment and has a 4.65M cap value in 2004- + he earned $703,300 in bonuses in 2004 (NFLPA Team Co-Rep.)

    18.75 mil was a big deal in 2002 for a lb'er

Like was mentioned beofre they were absolutely horrible against the pass and stout against the run so teams just passed on them all day long before Phillips showed up. With the exact same talent he made that defense a force.

We are stout against the run and middle of the pack against the pass. Why shouldnt we think he can do the same thing when his job here is easier?

So they didn't compete with themselves? Who were they supposed to compete with?

And whether they thought much of him, he was one of their better d players at the time. If they did cut him, surely it wasn't because of performance because hes been pretty solid throughout his career.

Just a summary of some LatinMind gems from this thread:

    - Flozell counts $9 million against the cap in 07.

    - The San Diego defense was always good (before Phillips).

    - Phillips is not agressive on defense.

    Great contributions, all of them.
