hey if you didn't know ABC's extreme makeover show was in Texas recently, in kemah which is where I'm from. my family was fortunate enough to be far enough inland that both hurricane RITA and IKE didn't effect us but lots of families were effected and this family i went to school with. Micheal i played football with and went to church, couldn't find a more stand up guy and Chris had Spanish with my girlfriend. i didn't know they were a foster family, they have 15 siblings and have been living in a double wide for 18 months. they really picked a great family to give a home to and I'm glad i know good people like them.

here is the link to the episode on ABC.com it is the beach family

EDIT* BTW Micheal and Chris are biological kids along with a sister the other 9 are adopted some of which are special needs

I watched part of it. I kept wondering what happened to their home insurance but they never mentioned it. Very deserving family hopefully they will be able to avoid the fate of some the other families. After the rebuild some of the families haven't been able to afford the houses and have gone in to foreclosure.

Yeah the taxes and mortgage. I don't know about that family but there have been stories about the families losing the new house.

It's cool what they do as a show, but that host is so far over the top that I just can't watch it.

I thought I read that there at least 5 families who have let their new homes go into foreclosure.

The home might be free but there is still insurance and taxes to be paid. Additionally the routine monthly expenses are likely higher do to the house being bigger.

"Gift Tax" is damn near 40%, and it can't just be added on by the show's producers, family etc. That just multiples the amount owed.

It's the same thing as if you win $$ on a game or reality show or lottery. You owe tax on that.

Do a google for "taxes on game show winnings", lots of articles info.

thanks ill check it out. that area is pretty wealthy you dont even consider moving to kemah/league city unless your income is at least in the 'middle class' range so hopefully they can keep up with the payments

Funny that. I lived in Kemah for a year a long while back. (Well technically in Bacliff, down in 'Millerville'). Not sure if any of those homes would have been standing after the hurricanes, it was close to the water. As it was, we had crawfish living in the front yard that the cat would bring in as playthings. I imagine the whole area has changed a bit since then though.

I watch this show every week with my wife and kids. It's very uplifting.

We were all so upset after the show when we saw that Mercy had died just a few weeks after the show was filmed.

All the houses in the world can't take away that pain.

    God bless them.
