Big thanks to theogt for the thread idea.

In looking at today's current stock of NFL players, who do you think is a first ballot Hall of Fame player, and why?

Feel free to break eachother's arguments down, and it isn't just limited to Cowboys players.

Just to get us started. Here are three.

    1) Peyton Manning for sure...based on body of work at an elite level his whole career.

    2) Probably Tom Brady ...combine the rings with a great QB and that should do it.

    3) Ray Lewis too.

The first four I thought of were the exact four who are mentioned above.

    My list...

    Ray Lewis
    Larry Fitzgerald
    Tony Gonzalez
    Jason Witten
    DeMarcus Ware
    Payton Manning
    Adrian Peterson
    Drew Brees
    Tom Brady
    LaDainian Tomlinson
    Patrick Willis
    Philip Rivers
    Antonio Gates
    Brett Favre

And Randy Moss...if he can be productive for 3 or so more years.

*edit - I'm assuming here that many of these players stay healthy. If they do, I think they'll be first ballot HOFers.

I think there are a few that are on their way, but just haven't played long enough to be a sure thing.

As for a sure thing, I would think Ed Reed could arguably could be on that list also. Champ Bailey? LaDainian Tomlinson would have a damn good shot at being a first ballot guys too.

Randy Moss if he is still actually an active player next season.

These are speaking as of today if they retired. Not guys like Ware and Witten.

Brady, P.Manning, Gonzalez and Ray Lewis are no-doubters. Ed Reed, Moss and T.O. are very likely. Brees, Tomlinson, Hines Ward and Champ Bailey are likely.

It's not very easy to get on the 1st ballot.

    LT is nice one.

That Ed Reed pick earlier was good too.

You're right about Favre, but he is not active.

Also, those nominating TEs may want to look at how hard it is to get in at all at that position....let alone on 1st ballot. I do think all three TEs will get in one way or the other.

I can't imagine Brees or Rivers getting in on 1st ballot unless Brees wins 1-2 more titles and Rivers wins a couple. JMO

Hines Ward is not a first ballot Hall of Famer.

I can't really think of a lineman playing today that is a lock for first-ballot. Jeff Saturday maybe? 5-time Pro Bowler, 2-time All Pro?

    Peppers maybe?

I did consider the difficulty in getting in on the first attempt, and to be honest, the TEs are more of a "I think they should" instead of a "I think they will."

But Gonzalez has every significant TE record in the NFL. If he's not first ballot, I think that's crazy. And Gates, just project his numbers for several more seasons. Unbelievable. Witten, actually, is the one I feel who has the smallest chance of being first ballot.

As for Brees and Rivers, those are based on projections. If both stay healthy, both will have Elway type numbers when they retire. That would make Brees a shoe in, I think. Rivers probably does need a championship, though.

BTW, I think Favre is still listed as active on Minnesota's roster. Could be wrong about that, though.

I'm not sure Hines Ward would make the HoF at all.

Revis with the Jets, Haloti Ngata with the Ravens. OL maybe Thomas for Cleveland is certainly on the right track.

On our team, I think Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware are the only guys that are first ballot guys, maybe the only Hall of Famers on the roster.

On other teams, I absolutely think Terrell Owens and Randy Moss are first ballot guys when they go in. Go back and look at Owens' numbers all the way through 2006-2007 with the 'Boys. It was madness.

Other guys that I think have the potential are LaDanian Tomlinson - ridiculous numbers. Tony Gonzalez is a lock, in my opinion. Obviously Peyton and Brady. Not sure about other players...I think Champ Bailey has a shot.

I didn't see Charles Woodson mentioned. He's had a pretty good career up to this point and I if can have a couple of more good years as he transitions to the safety position, I think he gets in (dunno about 1st Ballot).

If he does, he could claim the following:

    • Heisman Trophy Winner (1st Defensive Player ever)
    • National Champion (Michigan 1997)
    • NFL DPOY (2009 - Packers)
    • Super Bowl Champion (2010 - Packers)
Also has a fair number of Pro-Bowls/All Pro selections as well sprinkled in there.
