ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is making good progress recovering from a spleen injury, and is scheduled to see another doctor next week.

Coach Jason Garrett says doctors have monitored the Pro Bowl tight end's tests and blood work since he sustained a lacerated spleen after taking a hard hit in the preseason opener Aug. 13. The coach says everything has come back positive and that "everything is going fairly well."

The Cowboys have less than two weeks before their regular season opener Sept. 5 at the New York Giants.

Witten was standing on the sideline watching practice Thursday when the team worked out at Cowboys Stadium.

Garrett says the Cowboys will have a better idea about moving forward with Witten after he sees the doctor Tuesday.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The next step in Jason Witten's recovery from a lacerated spleen will be a visit to a doctor Tuesday.

"Hopefully, he can get an OK from that but this is all normal within the process of what we thought right from the outset," coach Jason Garrett said. "Everything that has come back has been positive for him and we're hopeful he can return sooner rather than later."

The Cowboys have not put a timetable on a return for Witten but have not ruled him out of the Sept. 5 season opener at the New York Giants. He suffered the injury Aug. 13 at Oakland and went to the hospital the next day.

Witten, who has missed one game in his career, has been told to be still and idle as he recovers from the injury. Doctors have reviewed blood work on an almost daily basis to measure how well the laceration is healing...

That he is standing & watching practice is a good thing...I thought they said normally it requires 10 days of being still.....
