A broken rib. A punctured lung. The looming possibility of an 0-2 start to the season.

As quarterback Tony Romo described it last week, the Cowboys had hit a sudden fork in the road.

Romo chose to play. His fractured rib chose not to stifle his breathing. The Cowboys won in overtime in San Francisco.

And Romo left Candlestick Park painted as a gutsy hero, rather than That Guy Who Blew the Jets Game.

A fair gamble, probably. A potential bloodied lung may be overrated, as far as I know.

Let's just hope our backup receivers are able to step up and surprise everyone. It'll, no doubt, be necessary for that to happen if Dallas is to secure a win. Austin is out. In the event Dez plays, which is questionable, he'll probably be limited to some extent. At the same time, Witten will surely be required to stay in and block for Romo, at least on a part-time basis, if nothing more.

As luck would have it, the Redskins are the healthiest team in the NFC East. This isn't to whine that a Cowboys win is unlikely. Rather, it's simply to suggest it'll probably require valiant efforts from those who've been lingering in the shadows of others for us to overcome so many injuries. With respect to that, I do believe we're about to learn more concerning who has what it takes and who doesn't.

There's little doubt that Ogletree, Holley and Harris will be obliged to step up and contribute to a significant extent for the Cowboys to secure a victory on Monday night. Godspeed to all three.

Well technically it wasn't all by himself, he had Robin (aka Jason Witten) with him.

Not only did he carry the team with a lack of help out there, but he had counter-productivity going on all over the place *Ogletree, Costa, Doug Free anyone?* I'm not going to go hard on Free, surely he's injured or something? But he's got to step up and play at the level he's capable of playing at.
