(9:00 AM): News and notes from around college football ... Rising Michigan State CB Chris L. Rucker won’t play when the unbeaten Spartans play Illinois this weekend after he was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated several hours after last weekend’s big win over Michigan. In fact, Rucker’s probation officer has recommended that he spend three weeks in jail for breaking probation after he was sentenced to 12 months' probation and 150 hours of community service for assault for his role in an on-campus fight. Meanwhile, Notre Dame RB Armando Allen will be a game-time decision prior to tomorrow‘s game versus Western Michigan; Allen who leads the Irish in rushing has a hip flexor. Same for Kentucky scatback Derrick Locke likely won’t play in tomorrow’s big game against south Carolina after suffering stingers in both shoulders in recent weeks. The playing status of Alabama junior WR Julio Jones will be a game-time decision Saturday when the Crimson Tide hosts Ole Miss. Jones, who broke his hand in last week’s loss at South Carolina, but played through the injury, has been practicing this week despite the fact that he had surgery immediately after the game. And North Carolina gets another player back this week as senior RB Ryan Houston has been cleared to play after missing the first five games in the season in the wake of the on-going NCAA investigations at the school.

(12:01 AM): Top ranking on line again on college sked ... With Alabama having stumbled at South Carolina last weekend, Ohio State inherited the #1 ranking in college football, however, the Buckeyes face a real test of their own when they play at Wisconsin on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, the SEC schedule features a dual between two of the best junior QBs in the country when Arkansas plays at Auburn. Here's a quick preview of who to watch in college football's big games this weekend with an eye toward the 2011 draft.
#12 Arkansas versus #7 Auburn; 3:30 PM ET; CBS … Another week, another opportunity for Arkansas junior QB Ryan Mallett (#15, 6-6, 240) to impress pro scouts against quality competition when his Razorbacks travel to unbeaten 7th ranked Auburn. In fact, aside from a disastrous 5-10 minute stretch at the end of the Alabama loss, Mallett has done just about everything expected of him this season; he has completed almost 70% of his pass attempts and is on pace to throw for over 4,000 yards and over 30 TD passes, but the 6 picks to date still have pro scouts worried about his decision-making in the pocket at times. Mallett won’t be the only junior QB under the microscope at Auburn this weekend. Indeed, the Tigers’ Cameron Newton (#2, 6-5, 240) has also quietly emerged as an outstanding dual-threat prospect; in particular, Newton is completing 65% of his pass attempts and is on pace to run for over 1,300 yards this fall.
