You can say what you want about the guy, but he just wanted to win.

NEW YORK - George Steinbrenner, who rebuilt the New York Yankees into a sports empire with a mix of bluster and big bucks that polarized fans all across America, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.
Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details.
For more than 30 years, Steinbrenner lived up to his billing as "the Boss," a nickname he earned and clearly enjoyed as he ruled with an iron fist. The Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants during his reign.

I loved him; I hated him. Twenty years ago, this news might have brought a smile to the faces of a lot of Yankee fans, but not today. At least he squeezed one more championship under his belt before saying goodbye.

Thanks for everything, George. You spoiled us.

I guess it's fitting that he died on the day of baseball's All-Star game.

    Good-bye to an American original.

True. People the world over only know him as a disembodied voice on "Seinfeld."

The only thing I really ever held against Steinbrenner was his firing of Dick Howser. There were things which he did that were irritating to me, but the swift boot to Howser's behind after such a great year was the worst for me.

There have been very few like you before and there will be very few like you after. Rest in peace, George.

You've really got to get food off the mind. George died of a heart attack, don't follow in his footsteps!

My favorite Steinbrenner episode was when George Costanza vanished and they thought he was dead and Steinbrenner insisted on giving the news to Frank and Estelle Costanza. They're sitting in the living room and Frank doesn't even seem to care about his son. He stares at Steinbrenner and blurts out "How could you trade Jay Buhner?" or something like that. :laugh2:
