I have an Sony Vaio all in one PC with Win. home Vista, and when I try to shut it down and it wants to install updates, it gets hung up and the updates won't install. I have to manually shut it off when it telling me not to do that.

Got any clues whats causing this and how to solve it?

I would think it is either a memory or registry problem. You can do a memtest86 to see if that is failing. There are several registry cleaners on the web too.

Have you tried to install the updates after it boots and before you run anything? I'm guessing you have. Have you tried installing one at a time? You can try to boot it in safe mode first and watch it try to do one step at a time booting and see what it does with the updates. I'm throwing stuff out there as all know I'm not a computer guru. You can also go back and restore to a point in time before the updates tried to install and see if you can avoid the issue. Also I think Vista sucks so you can restore to an earlier point in time and install a better Win version on top of that avoiding Vista. If all else fails then call someone who knows what the heck is going on.

First problem is Vista. I would just disable automatic updates all together.

I've found that booting into safe mode can result in the updates installing upon boot.

Exactly. Updates won't make it any better anyway so just turn them off.
Upgrade or wipe out and install windows 7.

I don't have any problems that need fixed. I did a long time ago when it first came out on my old computer, but not for many years. 7 is okay, but some things annoy me.

Vista uses/wastes more resources than 7. Vista is useless. I was a happy man when the army moved from vista to 7, my job became a lot easier.

if you're on a tablet. to me it looks like the partridge family bus crashed into the hollywood squares studio and threw up win 8. unless you have a touch screen it's pretty useless overall. hell, 8.1 is taking them back to the Win7 look/feel better suited for keyboards and mice.

Really...Win 8.1 is better? I have been thinking of upgrading to 8.1. Should I? It's a free upgrade...

I never use any of the crap on all those squares...I just go to the desktop and do my thing. Does 8.1 have all those squares?

The problem with that is, you cannot buy Win 7 anymore! I have looked all around for it. My son and I both want to get it but you cannot find it and I'm not sure if it's even supported anymore.
