Gordon Brown is frustrated by 'Psycho' in No 10

Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem.

The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words "wrong region" came up on his screen. Although he mournfully had to put the popcorn away, he is unlikely to jeopardise the special relationship – or "special partnership", as we are now supposed to call it – by registering a complaint.

A Downing Street spokesman said he was "confident" that any gift Obama gave Brown would have been "well thought through," but referred me to the White House for assistance on the "technical aspects".

A White House spokesman s******ed when I put the story to him and he was still looking into the matter when my deadline came last night.

By the way, when Obama's unlikely gift was disclosed, a reader emailed me to ask if Clueless was among the films. Funnily enough, it was not.

Brown, on the other hand, presented a rather more thoughtful gift to the American President in the form of a penholder carved from the timbers of an anti-slavery ship. The sister ship, in fact, of the one that was broken up and turned into the desk in the Oval Office.

I do believe you can get firmware updates on some players.

I know you could in the US at one time as I had trouble with one player playing a DVD that someone sent me from overseas.

Don't know if it works in reverse or if that even works on newer ones.

Maybe they should have sent a DVD player with the DVDs.

    Shabby and embarrassing.

I'm sure we're quite a laughing stock over in the UK right now.

I agree with Brainpaint, if they had given the guy a DVD player it might have been a better gift. But then, they also use different power standards over there so I doubt the DVD player would even plug into a wall socket in the UK.

Just a mess through and through...I can't believe Obama himself or any of his advisors were clued in enough to know about the DVD Regions thing. I'm shocked they settled on DVDs in the first place. It's cheap and shabby. Just a sad, sad affair.

Firmware updates do not change the "region mode" of any device.

I can see it now. Brown and the wife and kids have their popcorn and sodas getting ready to watch the movie and he gets the message it can't be viewed and he has to make the announcement...

"Sorry everyone, Barack screwed it up for everyone!"

We should get used to THAT phrase over here.

No it does not in fact the only way for him to watch it would be to install an open source player on a PC because most players that are not open source that you buy are generaly based of what country/region you live in as well.

VLC is one that does not care for an fyi

The PM doesn't have a multi-region DVD player?

    That is unbelieveable.

No, you dont understand, thats okay i see that a lot with you. He works over there, has a country to run, Queen to keep in check and usually a Royal mess or two to deal with, he has no time for DVD, let alone one from America.

In the United States, for the vast majority of DVD users, there is no reason to change your DVD regional code. But in the rest of the world, with so much product coming in from the United States, region-free DVD players and DVD players set to Region 1 are very common.

It isn't difficult to change the DVD player's region settings. You simply enter a code using your remote control.

The DVD rental stores I've been to here have both Region 1 (North America) & Region 2 (E.U.) DVDs available for rent.

Obama is a highly intelligent person. No question.

However, history is wrought with smart people who lacked even a middling amount of common sense, and given Obama's teleprompter issues and this most recent gaffe, I'm beginning to wonder if Obama is common sense deficient.

    The World Will Test Us

Hell he has no respect here, what makes us think we will get it from the rest of the World. I hope he's a damn good talker, oh that's right he needs his telpromter to be able to communicate.
    Were screwed!

Joe Biden tried to warn America; he really did. In October, while campaigning for his running mate, Biden predicted what would happen if America elected an untested, inexperienced, single-term Senator as President:
“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking.”
Indeed the world is, er, looking. And Russia, which floated the notion of basing its bombers in Cuba last week, gave the US Navy up-close looks at its bombers twice this week:
Two Russian planes flew within 500 feet of U.S. Navy ships participating in military drills with South Korea, military officials said.
After trying unsuccessfully to contact the pilots, U.S. fighter jets met up with the Russian planes and flew with them until they left the area, CNN reported.
One incident occurred Monday, when Russian Ilyushin IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft flew over the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis while it was in international waters in the Sea of Japan. The Russian aircraft flew within 500 feet of the carrier, which was lower than other Russian flyovers in the past year, military officials said.
On Tuesday, two Russian long-range bombers overflew the Stennis and the USS Blue Ridge several times at about 2,000 feet, U.S. military officials told CNN.
Earlier this month, the Chinese started harassing an unarmed Navy exploration vessel, requiring the US to send armed escorts into the international waters of the South China Sea. North Korea is about to launch an ICBM with a reported range that easily includes American territory. Moscow has flipped Kyrgyzstan and put our supply routes into Afghanistan in jeopardy.
Biden was right; they’re testing the mettle of the new President. Evidentally, they’re finding that he doesn’t have much, and they’re becoming more and more arrogant about their provocations.

There are a couple of problems, not just a single problem.

First, is the "region code" between the DVD and the player. That is an arbitrary "problem" created by the studios to allow them to control the release dates of movies in various regions. This can be gotten around with a firmware change, although it's not so much an "update" as it is a "hack". And is illegal depending on the prevailing laws in the area. But very doable. I had an old Apex DVD player that was sweet...first, it used a standard PC DVD-ROM drive, so if a new format came out (this was around the time writable DVDs came out and many consumer players were incompatible), you could go to the comp store and buy a new compatible IDE drive and swap it. Also, you could hack the firmware to have a menu option to change the region on the fly.

But the second problem that is a real problem, is the fact that the DVDs Obama gave Brown are NTSC, and the TV standard over in England is PAL. The signal itself is different, so in order to get around that he'd need an NTSC player *and* an NTSC television to hook up to it. As well as a voltage adapter for both since they would presumably be designed to run on North American or Japanese power outlets (NAmerica and Japan are the largest markets using NTSC).

In short, Brown has to jurry-rig a setup to watch these movies. Or...he could just watch them on a computer, as most PCs and Macs are format agnostic between NTSC and PAL (if you're in France on SECAM, you ... well, you're just French and get over it).
