Any chance we try and pick him up?

Garrett was asked about this earlier and wouldn't say if we were interested one way or the other.

We're ahead of Chicago on Waivers so it might be a good move just to keep him away from them.

Then what? Pay him 2.67MM to block him from Chi? Not sure Jerry would be down

Why Cowboys, Kyle Orton could make sense

By Todd ArcherIRVING, Texas -- Sometimes you have to think a little crazy in order to make some wise decisions, so I bring you this: the Cowboys should put a waiver claim in on quarterback Kyle Orton.

Denver surprised many Tuesday by deciding to cut the veteran quarterback now that Tim Tebow has gone 4-1 as the Broncos starter. Any team would have to pick up the remainder of Orton’s base salary, which is about $2.6 million, and possibly pay Denver some salary it had forwarded the quarterback earlier.

It makes sense for the Cowboys for a number of reasons.

Take for face value, that's a pretty compelling argument for signing Orton.

    Block him?

Did you notice that Kitna has been out for the last few games?

Orton would be a long term solution at backup for this year and beyond

Kyle Orton would be an awesome backup here. You'd literally lose no steps in the offense, at least vertically, if Romo got hurt.

I don't think he'd want to be a longterm backup at this point in his career.

Remembering how Jerry has covered his butt in years past with Steve Beuerlien and Bernie Kosar, I could see Jerry giving this some serious thought.

He lost his job to Tim Tebow. Long term backup is really the next step there.

Lol, I think we all know the circumstances are quite unique in Denver. No other front office in the league outside of Denver would start Tebow over Orton. Orton is just 29.

The OP only indicated making a move to block him, so I responded likewise.

I'd bring him in just to keep him away from Chicago, let alone replace Kitna while he's injured and beyond.

I am so on board with this idea.

His salary cap impact is non-negligible. After all, all salary paid to him this year is cap space that won't be able to be rolled over into next year.

Maybe if he was a FA instead of a waiver claim (so you could sign him for the minimum).

The way Garrett talked in the presser, it almost sounded like we are interested.

And I still don't see why Orton is a waiver guy and not a FA. Did this change in the latest CBA?

He's saying you wouldn't have to shorten up the passing game with Kyle Orton as your Quarterback like you do with Kitna.

I actually would like Kyle Orton as a backup. I think he is a starter in this league and can be streaky enough to be a top 15 guy at times.

You'd lose something. But not a lot. I just don't think he'll be interested.

I wouldnt mind him as a back up at all. He'd make a good back up for sure.
