    Parents: Rule’s half-baked
State’s junk food ban could take bite out of school fundraisers
By Laurel J. Sweet and Chris Cassidy

Bake sales, the calorie-laden standby cash-strapped classrooms, PTAs and booster clubs rely on, will be outlawed from public schools as of Aug. 1 as part of new no-nonsense nutrition standards, forcing fundraisers back to the blackboard to cook up alternative ways to raise money for kids.

At a minimum, the nosh clampdown targets so-called “competitive” foods — those sold or served during the school day in hallways, cafeterias, stores and vending machines outside the regular lunch program, including bake sales, holiday parties and treats dished out to reward academic achievement. But state officials are pushing schools to expand the ban 24/7 to include evening, weekend and community events such as banquets, door-to-door candy sales and football games.

The Departments of Public Health and Education contend clearing tables of even whole milk and white bread is necessary to combat an obesity epidemic affecting a third of the state’s 1.5 million students. But parents argue crudites won’t cut it when the bills come due on athletic equipment and band trips.

They could always sell pot. Wait, that would lead to more junk food eating, so maybe that won't work, either.

    And so it continues.

Big Brother sticks his hands in to something he has no business with.

You mean the school system shouldn't be able to dictate how it's money is raised???

I don't see how stopping bake sales that go to the school and usually utilize school time and resources are suddenly "off limits".

Let me ask it this way...

Would you be alright with kids selling porn to raise money for the school??

Furthermore, even if said fundraisers don't go to the school, the district has the right to say what can and cannot be allowed on its property, no??

I think you missed the point entirely.
No...you did miss the point entirely.
And made it far worse with your fund raising question.

    Then re-state the point.

I read it as "the school banning bake sales is impermissible government intrusion", which I find somewhat ridiculous.

Agreed. This country is straying so far from what our founding fathers intended. The government and it's agencies are trying to dictate every part of our lives and many people sees no problem with it.

Nobody knows more about how to run your life than our government. When will it stop?
    Will it ever stop?

In some pure fashion, yes it is government intrustion, but it's not different from the many other laws restricting waht you can and cannot do on certain properties.

Furthermore, it's not infringing on your right to have a bake sale, it's stopping you from having that bake sale on the schools time or property because it believes it is harmful.

A school district has a right (to some extent) to decide what is or is not allowable on it's property.

Is it "deciding what's best for you"? In some fashion, but so are laws against consentual pedophilia, drugs, age limits for driving, drinking and smoking, ect ect.

I simply think that the school district has a right to ban the promotion of certain foods that are proven to have be causal to serious health problems.

Yes, it is some level of intrusion, but I do think the principle that there are certain things that are harmful and should not be permissible in certain environments is a sound one.

I also think it's quite dangerous to reject that principle, as it leads down a path I don't think most of us want to see.

FWIW, I would have a markedly different opinion if this was about a school district banning...long hair or something decidedly banal.

The banning is asinine, but it's not remotely on par with the incident we discussed several months ago -- i.e. forcing students to pack certain foods in their lunches and fining their parents when they didn't.

    Ding Ding Ding...

Let families decide what they want their kids to eat...

I don't always agree with their choices, but my packed lunches were MUCH better nutritionally than the schools when I grew up...

Nanny State, cradle to grave crap...

This country was founded on individuality and freedom of choice within reason... this grab is certainly not within reason...

No matter your political affiliation, this country has taken a step back over the last 20 years... and it falls on BOTH sides of the political spectrum...

We need all new leadership from National and to State at least... on BOTH sides...

Our founders would be appalled at lifetime politicians...
