    ========================

The video game Medal of Honor (MoH) has gone on sale despite calls by the UK defence secretary to ban it.

The game follows the exploits of Special Forces troops battling insurgents in Afghanistan in 2002.

In August, Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox called for the game to be banned after it emerged that users could fight as The Taliban.

Its developer EA said the game was meant to be realistic, but eventually renamed The Taliban "The Opposition".

This edition, the latest in EA's long running series of games bearing the MoH title, has dispensed with its World War II theme and opted to recreate modern combat in the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

But with 150,000 American, British and Allied troops fighting in Afghanistan, many felt taking on the role of the Taliban was a step too far.

Dr Fox described the game as "un-British" and said it was "shocking that someone would think it acceptable to recreate the acts of the Taliban against British soldiers".

The Canadian and Danish Defence Ministers also criticised the game.

EA weathered the storm for a few weeks, but in early October the firm bowed to pressure and took the term "Taliban" out of the multiplayer option.

    Complete Story

Despite the change, the game is still banned from sale on military bases, although troops can purchase it elsewhere and play it on station.

you would think with the recession and the massive cuts to military funding they'd have bigger things to worry about than whether someone can control a taliban character in a computer game.

Please reserve your comments for things that you understand first hand.

Otherwise, a friend of mine that dabbles in Spec Ops got this game and said it's great, contrary to a lot of the media reviews that are trying to compare it to the hollywood-movie that is Call of Duty.

So killing people as British people.. ok. Killing people as Afgan people, not ok?

You're killing people with guns. Trying to draw some moral line in the dirt over who is doing the killing.. ridiculous.

Doesn't change the fact that an evil group of people have killed British soldiers.

A lot of good people died in WWII as well. What is the difference between killing people as Natzi in a video game and killing them as the Taliban in a video game?

not going to go into the politics of it but it also doesn't change the fact that its a ****ing computer game based on killing people. why should the government be able to tell you who you can and can't pretend to kill in the privacy of your own home? if it was encouraging people to go and fight then yes i would see the argument, but a game about blowing up afghans in their own country oh yes seems fine, wait a minute you can choose to go them and fight back? oh no thats terribly unbritish old chap, shouldn't be allowed. double standards in my book, you may have very strong beliefs about what the british army are doing there but that doesn't give you the right to impose those on others the same as a vegan can't demand i stop eating steak or because i like soccer it means everyone else must feel the same.

oh and casmith since you have the same amount of first hand experience playing for the cowboys as i have serving the BA in afghanistan i take it you leave commenting on that to others? or you pick and choose where to apply those criteria?

I think the airport scene in Call of Duty: MW 2 is more controversial than this.

Where people pissed about Return to Castle Wolfenstein where you could play as Nazis and slaughter people wholesale?

IMO, it is a game. As long as it wasn't created to BE disrespectful, then it doesn't matter. If you don't like it don't play it.

If it WAS created to be disrespectful, then the creator is just a straight up ****** bag.

Either way, it's just a freaking game.

Are they evil for defending their homeland from an invading army?

How can you defeat an enemy if you're afraid to try to see the battle from their perspective?

Anyone who played this game . . . is the buttons used much different than on Call of Duty?

I hate to sound old, but I wasn't able to pick up on Rainbow Six because I've played so much Call of Duty, I wasn't able to adjust to what buttons looked down the sight, fired, etc etc etc.

I wish the controls were universal for these kinds of games, because MOH looks awesome.
