Do you have a favorite politician? Someone whom you've studied or just really admire? Can be either living or dead, foreign or domestic. Who is it and why?

Mine is Thomas Jefferson because I really admire the Declaration of Independence and what it stood for at the time he wrote it, and beyond. He was a brilliant man who was also a noted inventor and an inspired writer. I feel he was inspired and inspiring.

The power of the Declaration's message to the Colonial powers we were overthrowing is just so moving to me.

I stood in front of the display at the National Archives and just looked at the names signed to it. Basically they were committing treason and signing their death sentence.

Reagan! He didn't take crap from anyone and he won the cold war without firing a single shot because people believed he was going to do exactly what he said he would do.

Plus he had to clean up the mess that was the former president, Carter. That couldn't have been a pleasant task.

Harry S. Truman - The last President with the balls to admit when he was wrong. A racist and Anti-Semite in his younger days, he desegregated the Army and was instrumental in the creation of Israel. He vetoed Taft-Hartley, was overruled, realized his folly and used it extensively.

"The Buck Stops Here" needs to be the motto of more Presidents instead of "I'm rubber and you're glue".

Plus he'd be a Republican today.

Thomas Jefferson. I like Ronny as well but lets not forget Iran-Contra and let's also not forget that he basically gave amnesty to the illegal alien situation.

Hank Williams Jr. had a song about him.

Mr. Lincoln I wish you were here
The Republics changed a lot in a hundred years
I don't think its working like you planned
Mr Lincoln we sure could use a hand

I just read the headlines in the Nashville News
And I wish i made this up but I'm afraid its true
Cause a man was murdered for his money in the street
He was takin' his wife to a nice place to eat
When they caught the man he did 23 months of time
He pled insanity like they do now all the time
Sir what would you have done in 1859?
Now if you shoot someone sir you can get off scott free
Its the latest thing Mr. Lincoln can you believe
Now they sue the manufactures of the guns
Ain't the law changed a lot since 1861?

Mr. Lincoln I wish you were here
The Republics changed a lot in a hundred years
I don't think its working like you planned
Mr Lincoln we sure could use a hand

I just heard the new story on the radio
They let dangerous men outta prison now yes sir I'm afraid its so
Because they're overcrowded and it was only his fifth offense
And this time he's killed someone does that make any sense
Now my lawyer called me about a nuisance case
Cause everybody sues over any little thing these days
Well at least we're right all we gotta do is tell the truth

He said you're living in the past you romantic fool
I said you got that right I lean toward the older ways
And there's damn few back woods lawyers left today

Mr. Lincoln I wish you were here
The Republics changed a lot in a hundred years
I don't think its working like you planned
Mr Lincoln we sure could use a hand.

The only good thing Lincoln ever did was get shot. Easily in the five worst Presidents category.

Carter's presidency was a blunder. There is no denying that. Nor is there really denying his poor ability as a President.

But to be fair, he did get dealt a poor hand.

    Then, he made it worse.

He still got the Camp David Accords and handled the Panama Canal Treaty pretty well IMO.

But he also got stuck with a poor economy, the Iranian Revolution (which the CIA didn't forsee.....gee.... I see a trend) which was in backlash partially because the US ousted the Democratically elected President and put the Shah in charge (which happened before Carter's time), which led to the gas crises......

He certainly didn't handle the situations well. But I am not sure some of the stuff that went on back then wouldn't have happened anyway, regardless of who was President.

He gave the Panama Canal away. I wouldn't call that an accomplishment, IMO.

This is all that needs to be known...

Carter attempted to micromanage a NATION...

You can barely micromanage a small corporation well, how can you expect to do that to a country of millions...

He was/is a man of character, but let's not excuse his VERY poor presidency with his humanitarian efforts these days...

Reagan took over a worse situation and turned this country around. He was dealt a much worse hand than was Carter...

As far as 20th century American politicians, my faves are Eisenhower, Truman, Silent Cal, and TR.

Gotta throw in Churchill if you expand it internationally.

    States' rights?

Though doesn't Buchanan deserve most of the blame, as the escalation at Fort Sumter and initial secessions occurred before Lincoln was inaugurated?

Although I respect Lincoln, there is a lot of info left out about him in the history books...

    You've got that right.

What do people really know about him other than he's on Mt. Rushmore and the penny and has a memorial in DC?

Because some that I like have already been mentioned, I'll add John Adams into the mix. He was a friend of Jefferson's--though they agreed to disagree a some selective topics. he was far less of a showboat or poser than Jefferson too....not that I don't admire TJ anyway. Adams had strong convictions, was very intelligent, fair minded, and tough.
