Alabama QB Greg McElroy breaks hand in Senior Bowl

    1/31/2011 7:39:14 AM

According to the Birmingham Press-Register, Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy cracked a bone in his throwing hand during Saturday's Under Armour Senior Bowl and is expected to miss about two weeks of throwing.

McElroy completed a pass on the first play of the fourth quarter to South Alabama's Courtney Smith, but hit his right hand on a helmet on the follow-through. He completed the series, but did not come back into the game.

"I had no feeling the rest of the series," he said immediately after the game. "The ball was kind of sporadic. I couldn't get a grip on the ball. I still can't get a grip on the ball. I think it will be OK."

    ********

I feel a UDFA contract for sure now.

I am not a fan of McElroy. Prolly because he bolted from a Tech commit to go Alabama late.

But as a pro I think he is too limited. Reminds me of Jay Barker.

If he gets good coaching for 2-3 years he's going to be legit.

Hes the safest QB in this class, going to be a backup for a decade at worst.

I think he's smart enough to be a QB Coach some day too. In that regard he reminds me of Garrett. Smart kid from a football family who is a decent, but not spectacular QB.

His best asset is his intelligence IMO. He is average at best in most other areas.

Backup journey man or possible future coach as hos indicated.

Not sure he would be better as a back up than SM.

If we are going to take a QB later I would rather it be someone with more upside.

But if it is a late round pick or UDFA...won't complain much.

Archie Manning seems to like him.

Ask Archie Manning about McElroy, and the former New Orleans Saint and father of Eli and Peyton can’t say enough about his potential.

Watching him work at the past two Manning Passing Academy summer camps left the former Pro Bowler impressed with more than McElroy’s leadership ability.

Playing in “the best league against the best people” bodes well for McElroy.

“It kind of bothered me after this year when he took the next step and people said he can’t play pro ball,” Manning said. “I think he will. I don’t know how the draft goes. I’m not very good at that, but I just think he’ll be on somebody’s roster next year.”

He and Ricky Stanzi of Iowa are my 2 favorite QBs in this Draft.

    I really like his upside

As an UDFA it would be a no-brainer, let him compete with McGee for # 3

I always say in the 7th grab the UDFA that you desire most, that'd either be him or Roy Helu Jr, who may have played his way into the 5th now.
