1st Round pick #7... Trade to New Orleans for picks

    Jerod Mayo LB Tennesee

Pro analysis: After sticking to form and trading down in the draft, the Patriots deviate a bit from their current history and take a linebacker in the first round in Mayo. The last time New England took a backer in Round 1, Andy Katzenmoyer was the pick in 1999, before the arrival of Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli. But Mayo is a good fit for New England. He's versatile enough to play inside or out and likely immediately fills the shoes of Rosevelt Colvin, who was cut loose. The next question: do the Patriots re-sign Junior Seau?

College analysis: The Patriots needed youth in their linebacking corps and Mayo was fills that void. He also has versatility to play in multiple positions, a highly-valued quality in New England. He was among the top tacklers in the country as a junior with 140 total stops, which led him to leave Tennessee early.
