A white football player using that word on camera in an apparently aggressive way is going to get a lot of attention. I don't know what I am more flabbergasted by--the fact that he seems to think its acceptable to use the word to refer to an African American he was having a disagreement with or the fact that he would say it out loud in public when he has to know there are cameras around.

Anyone remember when there were unsubstantiated rumors that Aikman was a racist because he yelled at black team mates? That got media attention even though there was no evidence at all for racism and Irvin told everyone to shut up. Cooper actually said the word on camera!

Agreed, .. Cooper displayed unthinkable ignorance. He is a moron.

But there are many morons, and there always will be in some form, .. let's quit talking about this one.

I didn't watch the video of the moron, but from my understanding he used the N-word (er or a - don't matter) in a derogatory manner to a African American security guard? This dude is definitely is a moron, especially for using it in the manner he did - in bad taste towards another person. If he would've said this word in the locker room around the media it still would've received the hate it's getting, even if it wasn't used in a degrading manner. People like to use the double standards rule and it's not right, how about no one says the word at all!

Also for the people saying ER, and A are different meanings have no clue, around where I'm at I constantly here BOTH words being used in the SAME manner. (To people claiming they're different words) Both of those words are highly offensive, and who are you to claim they're different meanings? It's a very slippery slope, because to Johnny the two words mean the same thing, but to Bob both words could have their own meaning. So instead of trying to interpret if someone used the word in a negative fashion by using the ER version, how about we just stop using the word all together! Is the word really that important that we can't drop and use another word in it's place like "brother", "sister", or even "homie". I don't even like the term "homie", but it's sure as heck better then the N-word.

I also remember when Stephen A. Smith (moron) on First Take dropped the N-bomb on LIVE T.V like it was no big deal. Guess what - nothing happened! So let's not crucify this R.Cooper guy, instead let's just all agree he's a moron and move on.

Wrong, this has the perfect mix of elements to keep the media churing out crap for days. If you can't see that you are being short sighted. This a storyline that could run for half the season. Next time Vick drops back and doesn't hit an Open Cooper was that a race issue or bad vison? Will Coopers bounty pay off? Will he be cut becuase Chip doesn't need the negative media as a rookie coach. If Vick goes down and Folk makes his numbers improve is that a thing? These are all sports storys that will be throw over every detail that happens from now on to the Eagles. If it was a lower profile player on lower profile team he would be cut by now and the world would move on.

For clarity, this info just came out yesterday. Why is there such a rush to move on when it hasn't even been 24 hours? It's still a relatively hot topic and worthy of discussion. Yeah, I think most of us agree he's stupid.

But from a football perspective, I am curious as to how this will play out in the lockerroom.

So you guys can move on, and leave those who still want to discuss or chime in the opportunity to do so. Like any thread, this one will die when the topic gets cold.

Well, I was born mid century and it was a pejorative then. According to what I'm reading it was the early 1900s that the use of the word became a pejorative. It's always been way more than ugly to enslave another being and to discriminate as well as injure others esp with racial insults. The word has other benign uses just not anymore. I'm not getting into an entymological discussion with u further especially over this word as I fear u will spin it just like u tried to trap me with this query.

I'm actually happy to see so many wanting to move on. I understand what you are saying about the football part and if it were just discussion on the football part, I would agree 100%. The other part of this, unfortunately, is about society and how society reacts to things like this. That part, to me, is just a waste of good type. I wished we would never have to deal with this kind of thing in our country ever. That's unrealistic of course. Still, so many other things that could be discussed and have much more value for all of us.

That, of course, is just my opinion Woodrow.

lol trap you? come on man we're having a discussion. I was and still am shocked that you believe that the word became a pejorative in the 1900s. That's why I asked you to clarify your statement b/c I thought I must have been reading something wrong. i won't go further with you if you don't feel comfortable that's fine. just know you are wrong. it's been used in a negative fashion since the 1800s. EARLY 1800s. when in writing, the word was placed in front of slaves' first names to differentiate between blacks and whites. so my statement about blacks (slaves) using it for hundreds of years is correct. i know wikipedia says 1900s but if you want more credible sources i can PM them to you.

I'm kind of where you are Jobs. I was born in a time where the country was still rife with real, honest to goodness prejudice and it was still proudly displayed in public. Not like today where outside influences try to recreate those times through the use of things like this. That may be a little bias on my behalf but I guess I just see it that way. To me, it's almost as if we disrespect what The Kings and the Kennedy's and a lot of other people tried to accomplish all those years ago. I believe, at least I hope, that those people envisioned a time when we actually could look at things like this, as if they were a peculiarity and treat those folks as if they were simply people who were troubled and not considered the norm or even a problem. More a misguided throwback from a bygone era. I think, hope, that they believed we would be past this by now and we would live without this nonsense being a constant inhibitor in our lives.

I don't know. Could be I'm just fooling myself here.

Of course, and I don't necessarily disagree about moving on. But if people want to move on that's they're right. But moving on from the current topic of the thread doesn't mean just talking about the racial aspect of it. We're all pretty agreed in our opinion of Cooper's words.

@BAZ wrote a pretty good post on some of the football ramifications related to Cooper's actions. And there will be ramifications. I think Chip Kelly would be wise not to send Cooper on any slant routes until the middle of the season.

I posted much earlier in this thread that the Eagles really have no choice but to keep Cooper. They are so thin at the position that they really can't afford to just cut him. They also can't afford to have one of their own take him out in practice. Until they find a replacement, they need him and not only a replacement for Maclin but another guy on the depth chart who can provide depth. They are like three deep now.

Ya know, ABQ, I do believe we've progressed alot in race relations over the years. But every now and then something happens to remind me that we're not as progressive as I'd like to believe. This is not indicative of Cooper (idiot#1), but just from personal experiences. Racial incidents aren't overt as in the days when you were growing up. People aren't walking around yelling n-words and spitting on black people anymore. But there are incidents which occur that make you shake your head. And the reason why these discussions continue to occur, because so many people want to move on instead of actually discussing and trying to see all sides of today's issue and attempt come up with preventative solutions.

This isn't a lost cause. Dr. King's dream hasn't been fully realized, but it certainly isn't worthy of being written off either.

Yeah, they're not going to cut him...and I think the calls for his release or suspension were a bit unrealistic. This wasn't a case of Hernandez accused of killing someone..or multiple someones. An apology, a press conference, sensitivity training, and some training camp hazing, and the story will all but be forgotten until their first preseason game.

    Because it is?

As i told Natural.. find the shortened version of the word in a dictionary and then i'll agree its a different word.

You won't.. and its not. Its a slang term for the word. Either way, i hear both used far too often, in the context of:

"Hey, there's my (word).. how you doin, (homie, man, G, etc)?"

It originates with the whole black/white issue.

If he had told the security guy "he would fight all of the bums here", this would be no story.

Bottom line, .. short sighted as that is.

Not to interrupt the heated discussion here, but how much lower profile player can you get than Riley Cooper?

Vick did worse and has a job in the NFL.. While I don't like that he said he has a right to say it at least according to a document that was signed by the founders

I don't know that I agree with this Woodrow. The maddening thing for me is that I see us right on the precipice of actually putting this stuff behind us. I think that if you had real, honest discussion with most Americans, we would find that they are ready to move on. At least that's what they would say and I honestly believe that this is also what they believe in their own minds. However, because we don't just acknowledge this and continually try to bring race into every aspect of our lives, we fail in that endeavor. More and more I am convinced that this is a manipulation (that's the tinfoil and flying helicopter part of my brain perhaps) effect. If we just embraced the fact that we are all masters of our own situations and that we are all part of one society, I think all of this would be behind us. This is not to say that we can't disagree but on this issue, what person could stand in disagreement? That person would stand alone and thus, not serve to divide people.

No, I'm for treating these fools like fools and moving on to better things. I don't believe that this country is racially divided. I believe that is being manufactured and if we simply ignored those who supported those kinds of ideas, we would be better off. I don't need anybody to tell me that I like you. I can figure that out all on my own and it doesn't have one damn thing to do with color. It only has something to do with that if I let it. That's what I think is going on here. We are letting issues like this be used to color or influence us too much. Things have gotten a lot better since the bad old days, I agree with you. That's mostly why I say what I say. I think we are ready as a country to move beyond this. We just have to trust our own moral compass and do it. We don't need to be lead down a bad path. That's my opinion anyhow. I know you may not agree.
