Who could be a potential target as a traditional 4-3 OLBer in say rounds 2 or 3?

Has anyone given that a thought?

Bruce Carter played OLB in a 4-3 at UNC.

But they would need another Hos.

The way I'm thinking is that Ware would be a DE, Spencer would gone.

    Lee would be the MLB.

I really like David from Nebraska in round 2.

    Ware-Rat-Spears-?
    Carter-Lee-David

I know its never going to happen but that honestly looks better than what we have now. Our front 7 would be improved a lot. Just would have to add a true 4-3 end somewhere, but that shouldn't be too hard. Hatcher would even be a passable 4-3 end

True enough, Butler would be the other most likely.

    I don't see us moving to a 4-3.

No. I haven't given it any thought. Because switching back to a 4-3 is an awful idea not worth my time.

Bruce Irvin would likely be available in rounds 2 or 3, and I think he could project as a WOLB.

I like Butler, but I don't think he has the lateral quickness nor the speed for a 4-3OLB.

Probably won't go to a 4-3 either. Just sparking some Sunday conversation. :)

Until Ware retires, I don't even consider a 4-3 here. He's just too dominant a presence at 3-4 OLB to goof with.

It's really not that outlandish. We really don't have the right players at the moment to man the 3-4. We don't have a NT and our best 5-tech is playing NT. Our 2nd MLB is a huge ?, and our under achieving SOLB is a FA and we have no immediate replacement. I'm a huge fan of running the 3-4 but the right parts need to be in place. I realize we aren't going to change anytime soon, but its really not a terrible idea if u think about it.

I've thought about it. It's a terrible idea. It's an inferior scheme. We need players regardless. No sense adding to the mess by going back to a scheme that isn't as effective when it's humming on all cylinders.

The 3-4 gives you more options to create confusion on protection. It's easier to find that edge rusher any defense needs. Our players are experienced in the scheme. Our defensive coordinator prefers it.

I can't think of a single logical reason why I'd want to make the switch. It seems to me to be more about fans who can't admit their players aren't good enough, so let's pretend the scheme is holding us back.

I've got a better idea. Find better players. Maybe run a 3-4 defense with an actual 3-4 nose tackle. That would be a start.

You know, I think Mario Williams would be far more effective as a 4-3 DE.

Interesting tidbit I got from twitter:
The Cowboys have interviewed Bequette who needs to add weight to play a 3-4 DE... however the Cowboys are having Hatcher DROP weight.

Hm. Sure sounds like a 4-3.

I believe there was a thread in the Newszone that explained the Cowboys defense is considered more of a 4-3 look by pro personnel people anyhow.

Yup. I think the 34/43 debate - in Dallas anyways - is exaggerated. The only reason I can see switching to a 43 is that it will allow Ratliff to use his quickness a lot more and make plays against the run, rather than trying to eat up space and getting double teamed all the time.
