Wow, Hugh Douglas? The only guy who stood up to T.O. He's a leader in the locker room too. That's a surprise.

The Giants said goodbye to 18 players and hello to one today as they made the roster moves that enabled them to reach the regular-season roster limit of 53 players.

Among those released were linebacker Kevin Lewis, who started all 16 games at middle linebacker last season; quarterback Jesse Palmer, who had been with the team since 2001; offensive lineman Wayne Lucier, who started 20 of 27 games in which he played in his two seasons with the Giants; and Mark Jones, the team’s punt returner in 2004.

The Giants also announced the signing of Chad Morton, a veteran running back who can return punts and kickoffs.

All four of the team’s draft choices made the team: Corey Webster, Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs and Eric Moore. So did three rookie free agents: defensive end Adrian Awasom, linebacker Chase Blackburn and safety James Butler.

Technically, the contracts of Lewis, Palmer, running back Michael Cloud and offensive lineman Lewis Kelly were terminated.

The players who were waived include Lucier and fellow offensive linemen Brandon Winey, Morgan Pears and Myniya Smith, running back Ryan Grant, wide receivers Jones, Ataveus Cash and Michael Jennings, tight end Darius Williams, defensive linemen Jonas Seawright and Raheem Orr, linebackers James Maxwell and T.J. Hollowell, and safety Curry Burns.

Broncos also released Jeremy LeSueur. I'd love to give him a shot at FS. He was a 3rd round pick just two years ago.

    Position: CB
    Class: Sr
    School: Michigan
    Conference: Big Ten
    Ht., Wt.: 6'0, 197
    40 Time: 4.55
    Grade: 3.78

    Selected by Denver Broncos
    Round 3, pick 22 (85 overall)
BIO: Became a full-time starter as a senior and posted 48/2/12. Started seven games as a junior and finished the year with 52/7/1, also averaging 22.4 yards on 26 kick returns.

POSITIVES: Nice-sized cornerback that improved his total game as a senior. Solid footwork moving in reverse, keeps the action in front of him and displays a nice break on the pass. Possesses both recovery and closing speed, easily runs downfield with opponents then positions himself to break up the throw. Offers a lot of explosion and suddenness in his game.

NEGATIVES: Does not slow opponents off the line of scrimmage with a jam and must learn to use his size as an advantage.

ANALYSIS: Though LeSueur must improve the technical points of his game he could very well be one of the most improved cornerbacks in the senior class. Merging his speed and athleticism into playmaking ability, he capped off a terrific 2003 campaign with a fine showing at the Senior Bowl and solidified himself as a first-day pick.

    PROJECTION: Early Third Round

    Broncos Get Down to 53
    By Andrew Mason
    DenverBroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Terry Pierce knew the end was near.

The third-year linebacker started and played throughout Friday night's game against the Arizona Cardinals. But he was aware of the chances of being released, and his fears were realized Saturday when the Broncos waived him and 18 other players at the final roster cutdown.

"I kind of knew that was going to happen with the way we were running our 'D,'" Pierce said as he stopped in his car before driving away from Dove Valley for the final time as a Bronco. "I talked to Mike (Shanahan), and he told me he didn't want to put me in the situation I was in last year, where the possibilities of playing weren't going to be very high."

"He was in trade talks, and the timing just wasn't right with the trade, so he said it would be better to release me and have me go play somewhere rather than keep me here and be a backup or deactivated all season."

The other 18 players released included guard Tyson Clabo, offensive tackle Anthony Clement, cornerback Curome Cox, defensive tackles Dorsett Davis and Mario Fatafehi, running back Quentin Griffin, defensive end Aaron Hunt, safety Jeremy LeSueur, wide receiver Triandos Luke, quarterback Matt Mauck, fullback Brandon Miree, offensive linemen Chris Myers and Ben Nowland, defensive end Anton Palepoi, offensive tackle Erik Pears, linebacker Jashon Sykes and guards Chris Watton and Zach Wilson.
