This depends also on results, if said coach is struggling but retained, many times the GM enforces the changes.

Of course, those GM's answer to someone too and lose their job if they aren't making the right decisions.

    That structure doesn't exist here.

The owner, McNair, hired Wade Phillips for Kubiak after Kubiak basically had to fire his entire defensive staff and beg to keep his job....

Enough of the bull... Just tell Garrett he needs to give up the play-calling or face the reality of being fired.

I don't know what that has to do with what I said?

If your argument is that it's OK for Jerry to do this because another owner has, go ahead. That doesn't make it right.

Good question. The GM has every right to make that request.

You said that every other "GM" in the NFL is held accountable for their hires, and this was specifically in reply to Kubiak being forced to hire Wade.

I pointed out that in that situation there was no "GM" involved to be held accountable. Bob McNair forced Kubiak to fire his assistants. Bob McNair then hired Wade for Kubiak. Are you saying that Bob McNair is the GM "held accountable" if Wade didn't work out?

Exactly..the GM's job rides on his decisions as well (in most cases)..he can do more than request it.....Telling him what he's NOT going to coach anymore is not telling him how to coach.

We don't really know how involved Rick Smith was in that move, but either way, it goes back to my point. In that case both the HC and GM were held accountable for their poor decisions.

Even though the hire worked out, I would still argue it was handled incorrectly.

Either way though, they were at least held accountable. That does not happen in Dallas.

We have it directly from Kubiak's mouth that these changes occured after he personally met with McNair, not Rick Smith. McNair said he had scheduled a meeting with Wade, not Rick Smith. Rick Smith was teetering on the verge of being canned himself, and probably would have been thrown out with Kubiak if Kubiak didn't agree to the changes. Keep believing in your little make believe world.

So you're agreeing with me that we are the only organization where the GM doesn't have to answer to anyone for their poor decisions?

What are you talking about? Was Garrett not hired as OC be fore Wade? Is Jerry not flying around the country chasing Monte Kiffen?

Not that easy when you bring in Jason Garretts remaining 2year guaranteed contract at 4.5mil a year.....Jerry would have to give him 9mil to go away.(not gonna happen)....that or make it very uncomfortable for Garrett until he leaves on his own free will...

I was thinking more along the lines of:

Jerry: "Hey Jason, next year we need someone else to call plays."

Jason: "Okay, if you get someone else to make personnel decisions."

    Jerry: "YOU'RE fired."

These Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys comparisons are pretty stupid. It may actually have proven a point if the Texans were perennial winners.

Mort: Jones is pushing Garrett to give up play-calling duties

Posted by Mike Florio on January 12, 2013, 12:06 PM EST

Changes have indeed come to Valley Ranch.

Apart from the departure of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and the change in philosophy from 3-4 to 4-3 with the arrival of Monte Kiffin, more seismic shifts are possible.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, owner Jerry Jones is pushing coach Jason Garrett to relinquish play-calling duties. Per Mort, Jones also may be trying to get Garrett to fire his brother, tight ends coach John Garrett.

Basically this guy needed to put out a story so he stole Mort's.

    Nothing new here.
